I remember many years ago('84-85) seeing surplus M1s for sale at Mcleods(?) Hardware in Regina. How available are they, and where do they fall regarding firearms regs? If they are over 5 rounds centrefire semi-auto, doesn't that make them prohibited, or since they take a shortened .30 round, does that classify them as restricted? So confused! Need another beer!
 
Non-restricted, mags to be pinned to 5. Availability is based on finding someone that wants to get rid of one. You won't find very many on a shelf somewhere. I do believe that there's at least one in the EE here though.

I shoot mine quite often and take it out against yotes a lot. Great little rifle.
 
Non-restricted if barrel is over 18 1/2", restricted with original length barrel. Magazines limited to 5 round capacity, otherwise the magazines are prohibited devices.

I don't know where you got anything about a shortened 30 round. The issue is rimfire versus centerfire. The 30 carbine round is centerfire. That is what counts.
 
The original M1 carbines all had barrels under 18 1/2". There is a thought that the government used this particular firearm to set the standard on barrel length to make these restricted. You can find rebarreled M1 carbines over the 18 1/2" limit to make it unrestricted. You may also find spare barrels out there to rebarrel a restricted one into unrestricted but that may be sacriledge. :D

The origins of the 18.5 inch reg go back to C51 and the Libs in 1978 and relate directly to the M1 Carbine. As usual, it was a mindless, kneejerk reaction to a robbery involving an M1 Carbine in Toronto at the time.

It's good to see that 30 years of reflective contemplation has given the Libs a wiser attitude ;)
 
"...find spare barrels..." Sadly, they're few and far between. Iver Johnson made some 19" barreled Carbines in 1979ish, but for a very short time and not many. Until the latest batch of stupid laws, putting on a barrel extension was ok. It's not now.
The Carbine was put on the restricted list supposedly because Montreal bikers were using them during their assorted criminal activities. Usually cut down to pistol size. Not that it matters why. We got to pay for their crimes, as usual.
The original mag was a 15 rounder. The 30's came later. Both are evil unless they're pinned to 5. There are some 5 round mags Stateside, but nobody bothers with them here because the rifle is restricted. You can't do much of anything with a restricted rifle. Few retailers carry carbines any more due to the restricted status. Milsurps aren't imported either, for the same reason.
Don't believe all the Internet fables about Chicom quilted jackets stopping the .30 carbine's bullet. Military ball is somewhat anemic, but properly loaded HP's or SP's are not. A 110 grain HP with IMR4227 will blow a hole the size of a grapefruit in a ground hog.
 
M1 Carbines were a dime a dozen at one point. Every pawnshop had at least one on its shelf for cheap.

The little carbine was lethal at close range. Back in the 80's, a cornered drug dealer in Vancouver took out a ERT leader and wounded his team mate with his M1 before he was killed by returned fire from the police.

Where can I buy an M1 Carbine these days? Even if it is restricted? I can't seem to find even just one.

No, those with folding stock do not count, unless they can be easily converted back to the original look.

Back in the '60s, there were a whole whack of them showed up, I believe from Indonesia. They were alll M-2s which had had the full-auto lever switched into semi-auto position and then the lever itself removed.

Watch for these because they are a VERY sick bird (ill-eagle= illegal) and Big Brother will give you free board and room practically forever. Likely, you would do less time in jail for just killing somebody, but that's the way she is.
 
you wont find any m1 carbines ive got them ALL !!!!!!

and no i wont sell them


used to be easy to find now its getting harder not sure why they are still priced real low

There is a Universal M1 Carbine (made in the 70's) for sale in EE now (yes I found it), but it doesn't seem to be the most desirable.

What is the chance of me finding a true USGI carbine in Canada?
 
I have non-restricted USGI.. I'll give me your number and I'll have my lawyer give you a shout when they liquidate my assets when I die.

...wait, can a coffin be considered "safe storage". ..You might be out of luck. :)
 
As far as commercial brands go I picked up a non restricted plainsfield a while back ,reliability and function are excellent.Keep looking as the little carbines are a hoot.
