Best Mauser 98 Receiver

I would say that despite being made in China, the Dumoulin M98 actions that came to the market are really underrated. They are well made and the steel is quite good too. Only downside may be the integral top rail mount.
So are the Zastava. They both come with a quite good adjustable steel trigger.
I agree that the post war (especially from 1949 and up) commercial FN actions used by Husqvarna and the Spanish ones from Parker-Hale are also great to make hunting rifles, much easier to work than military actions.

Dumolin 98 receivers, two American companies make mounts that just screw right in place
Then you can use American rings

Arent dumolin receivers made in China?

I guess that’s not an indicator of quality but it can certainly be a hint

The best 98 receiver that I have personally examined was a mid-1930's German military action made by J.P Sauer and Sohn, Suhl (according to the Ordnance Code stamp on the receiver). I compared it to an Oberndorf sporter, an FN, Brno VZ24 and a Brno commercial 98s, among others. It exceeded them all in terms of build quality, with a very smooth bolt and a truly remarkable lack of toolmarks. It got built into a custom rifle that I no longer own. However, if I had that Sauer action now, I would probably just use it as a paperweight, a benchmark M-98 receiver to be admired for its own sake. It was a real gem.

Examined an "Original Oberndorf Mauser" 98 action recently. Better than I remember. I think these are the best of the available 98 actions for a custom build. Not too hard to find one, but expensive.

All I know is that I have a nice sporter someone built on a Brno military action and a 1952 Husqvarna on a FN action and they work.

Has anyone tried the Voere “refurbished” Santa Barbara receivers?

Models 2165 and 2155 available at Sporteque

Looks like the options are a tang safety and m70 styled. Then there is a few options for a more modern euro style decocking safety? Maybe someone who is fluent in German can translate?

Pretty cool, on their site they have a variety of bolt handles available. Lots of caliber options. I wonder if the manufacturer sells the barreled actions with these safeties.

Good discussion going here. I have never entered the world of custom rifles, but I do have a fairly good sized pile of milsurp Mausers. For a you g buck in 1965, I was already bitten by the milsurp bug, and have been adding to the heap ever since. Lately I have scored a few sporters made up commercially from new old stock and used military Mausers. Some nice rifles out there to be had for reasonable money.

Lots of nice rifles on the used market with claw mounts.

I have heard of people converting them to take Talley QD bases, any other solutions to modernize receiver bridge claw mounts?

It also vents escaping gas from a case failure out of that sidewall before any high-pressure gas reaches the bolt shroud, and does so while still allowing cartridges capable of producing greater than 50,000 psi chamber pressure to be fired safely.

Ted

Many commercial Mausers (Husqvarna 1600, Ruger, Brno zkk…) don’t have a full thumb cut out but still have a large cutout to vent gas in the exact same spot, visible only from the top of the action.

I would keep it simple and look at a Browning Safari built on an FN commercial action. Classy, well-finished, and it already is a hunting rifle.

My Zastava experience has been poor at best, two range outings and its still never been fired... My sample size is small (1), but based in my experience I would not recommend.

I have a customized K98 1941. I did find out from the serial # what factory built it, but have since forgotten the name. I do remember the factory was in Berlin. It has custom bottom metal with floor plate, a timney trigger and believe the barrel is a douglas. Its chambered in 300 win mag. I'm not a mauser guy, lol.

Love mine; what caliber/model is yours?
