A Husqvarna Model 458 fullstock carbine with Monte Carlo comb, 30-06 calibre. Serial number on the rifle dates it to 1967. Appears to have been upgraded in Sweden, either at the HVA custom shop or at the retail level, or a combination of both. Upgrades include the better-than-average walnut and checkering, jewelled bolt and extractor, large synthetic (Trolit?) bolt handle knob, hand-engraved trigger guard and floorplate, quick release sling swivels (the kind that remove completely, leaving no stud), a clean-breaking 3.5 lb. trigger, etc. To me, the excellent trigger is the best upgrade. I put a "lucky" older model 4X Swarovski on it (w/ German 4A reticle.)

Although I know the big plastic bolt knobs are not for everyone, I really like them and have them on some other Scandinavian rifles.

That checkering is very nice and those “Saturn balls” do work well. Oversized bolt knobs are popular with the long range precision rifle shooters sports.

That’s the nicest 458 I have seen, and the first Husky I have seen with slab sawn wood.

Are these large knobs often seen on Swedish import guns generally threaded on? Or are they fit over the bolt some other way?

There is a fullstock 30-06 MS on intersurplus that has seen some serious time in bjubbas shop.

Of the ones I have seen, some are factory and some are aftermarket. Most seem fairly permanent (maybe threaded plus glue?), but some of the knobs are only threaded on and can be threaded off again, others are just rubber covers that slip over the bolt knob, and some are homemade from a roll of "hockey tape" (I did that myself back in the day), ...plus some are hardwood or bone/antler. I have seen hardwood ones that can be threaded on and off. They had a threaded steel insert in the wood...so easy enough to replace with a larger or smaller knob, or make your own replacement. There are several German rifles with large hardwood bolt knobs from the factory.

For me, the Swedish Mauser 96 ####-on-closing action is faster to cycle than a Mauser 98 type ####-on-opening action. This, combined with a large bolt knob can make for a quick second shot.

Cheers

Interesting to hear about the “hockey tape” intersurplus has a rifle that appears to have this variety, almost looks like it’s “ melting”. I was thinking it looked easy to take off and was hoping most were. Oh well, can’t win em all
