Brno Model 5s

In the 60's and 70's a lot of Brno 22's were altered with good target sights for competition .22 sporting rifle class. Some of them were even put into CIL 190 stocks...

The older unaltered ones are very desirable today.

The Parker-Hale sights for Brno .22s require no alteration. They just slip on and off.

I have one model 5 that came with the Parker-Hale sights and one that has a Redfield which the receiver is drilled and tapped for and the stock relieved. Both are lovely, mintish guns. Interestingly they both have model 1 barrels.

I have minty examples of both of those as well. What do you mean by "model 1 barrels?" Marked as Model 1?

I've had four in total, I'm down to two now that all appear to be factory correct, date stamps match on barrel and receiver, but have model 2 receivers and model 1 barrels. All four are date stamped 57'. The two that I currently have are very clean, one of them the previous owner claimed it was unfired, and it appears that way, but I make no such claims. All four serial numbers are within a few hundred of one another. I speculate that they are early run model 5's, before they actually stamped the "model 5" and simply put an existing model 1 barrel on a model 2 receiver.

Sorry I wasn't clear, they are marked "Model 1" on the barrel. All four had model 1 stamped barrels on model 2 receivers. All four serial numbers were around 48600, give or take a hundred. One had standard sights and a plainer stock, the other three had aperture sights and fairly nice wood, a bit of figure. Not exhibition grade or anything, but nice.

Brno 5 1958 with Parker Hale peep and brass holder to be mounted onto stock, frt sight removed. Stock like many Brno was cut to shorten LOP homemade spacer added. The 2 had a recoil added by 1st owner. I sold my Brno 4 and waiting for a Brno 1 my bro has.

Nice Brnos tracker! Mind you to me all Brnos are nice! I'm curious though, I can't be the only one with a model 5 that has a model 1 stamped barrel? I have had four, currently own two. Anyone else out there have one? If so, what are the details and serial number range? Although I'm guessing we'll never know, I'm curious how many were manufactured. I'm speculating that they are transition guns using up remaining model one barrels.

The peep is a Lyman screw on frt and brass container are Parker. Original owner tailored rifle to fit him unfortunately. Barrel is a number 5. Do u find the safety stiff and hard to apply or release.

Over the last four decades, I have owned over a dozen Brno .22s and only a very few had anything like a smooth safety. Most were stiff, some very stiff, and my simple attempts to smooth them out (disassembly and polishing, greasing, etc.) never really suceeded. There may be a trick to getting them smoother, but I don't know what it is. If anyone has had success in smoothing ot the Brno .22 saftey, I would like to hear about it.

All my Brno safety have been hard to apply and release. My 5 also requires you to eject spent case with authority.

Never experienced a problem with ejection in any Brno.

The stiff safeties I can live with. One of these days I'll learn from someone how to smooth them out.

Yes, I also own one of these gems. Dated 1957 with number 1 barrel and serial #48764. Beautiful French walnut stock and loves Federal hollow points! My all time favorite 22. Steve

Hey Steve, thanks for the reply. You're serial number is within 100 of my serial numbers. We'll probably never know, but I'm curious how many #1/5 Brnos were put together.
