M40 Family - Who owns one?

I wonder if PGW has any leftovers? I know they have essentially closed up shop, but the least batch of A5 stocked rifles they put out last year had some rails on them so who knows if the have a couple left over-might be worth an email

I don’t know of a similar looking brake to the SSAL/RE from Surefire, they still make them in small batches apparently but they are tough to get up here and even when they do show up south of us people are asking $300 USD for one. Maybe go A3 hybrid-everything else stays the same just no brake?

Edit: if you can get a SF Socom in 7.62 up here that’s kind of close in appearance

You’ve got me thinking about using my barreled action in a A6/A7 build instead and putting my A1 parts kit in the corner of the safe for now.

We haven't closed up shop, we have scaled back in a couple areas. We're still putting together rifles and we do have the M40 forward accessory rail available.

Well I'll beat this dead horse one more time, stock is finished and rifle is reassembled. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Its definitely darker in the areas where end grain is exposed but I'm ok with that, gives it a bit of a used look to it I guess. Mix of old and new parts, I think I can put this project to rest and let it get back to its proper place (in the back seat of my truck). I've been seeing coyotes everywhere the last week or so, and haven't had a rifle with me.

Nice!

Wow, how did that come about?

Right place right time really. Went down on a shoot with Craft International and the whole training cadre including CK decided to make it a party weekend/getaway. Taya and the kids came down too. It turned into shooting during the day and long nights of whisky and mesquite fires.

So after a lot of searching I've decided I'm going to try this. It's CNC aluminum "copy" of the M40 rail made by Action Sports Games (ASG). Although not an exact copy, it does mirror the overall size. Best news it was only $100 USD after the cost of shipping. A lot nicer than the $400 USD for a PGW M40 rail. Yes I'll probably get some hate putting an airsoft piece onto my real rifle (and I'm not happy about it either) but if it works, then I'll have saved some money for something that was just going to be cosmetic on my gun anyways.

I'm not privvy to M40 specs, someone care to edumacate me on this particular build sans Optics?

Its a new 700 I bought last year, mistakenly bought a sporter profile when I thought it was a varmint. Re-barreled and action work done by a local smith. Finished with cerakote and assembled by me. A member here responded to a wanted ad for a stock, and I turned an old ADL stock into this with a linseed oil finish.

Virtually every part other than the receiver was offered to me by members here, definitely wouldn't have built it without their help. I still need to put a different buttplate on it, and want to see if I can get some lower rings to snug the Hi Lux down a bit more.

Appreciate the quick run down sir. It turned out wel.

Anyone making Winchester M70 sniper rifles?

There have been a few, an internet search should pop something up. I assume you mean tribute type rifles, rather than new manufacture from Winchester. Unertl 8x scope will be hard to find, rest shouldn't be too hard to do. I have an old 270 Win model 70 I've been thinking of rebarreling and doing similar to. - dan

Early M70 Winchester's used basic 3x9 scopes
Redfield, Weaver 3x9's
One was sold complete a couple of years ago
It was in the same serial number range and same calibre, 308 as mine
They just used M70 factory heavy barrel rifles in 308 and 3006
I have a complete 308 and all of the fittings for a 3006, just have to have stock work done
It had a weaver 3x9

Pretty sure the early Winchester had unertls for scopes (it is what the usmc had a stock of). 3-9's came later on, and primarily on the Rem built sniper rifles. - dan

So as I posted about awhile back, I'm doing a "budget build" of an M40A5 rifle. Some of the parts are near unobtainable, such as a correct scope mount and the muzzle brake. So some things I've had to resort to things that look similar enough.

The scope mount for the most part won't look any different. The biggest difference is the real one had slot tabs which required slots to be cut into the receiver. I'm going with just a regular rail.

The muzzle brake is a near a ghost. The actual Surefire brake has long since been discontinued and used versions IF you can find them run about $400 USD. So for this I've gone with a different Surefire brake (thanks to njohnson) . It looks somewhat similar although only half the length.

The third thing is the forward rail that goes over the barrel at the end of the stock. The originals were made by PGW and were sold to the USMC. These too have been discontinued although PGW has a couple hiding in the back room. But these will run about $400 Canadian for something that will just be for looks on my rifle. So I found a company called ASG (Action Sport Games) that made a copy of one from CNC'd aluminum that is the exact same specs as the original and cost me only 1/3 of the price. (Sorry to PGW for going with the knockoff :p )

I should be back to work after my surgery on Tuesday so I'll try to get some pictures of the pieces if they are all ready.

Company sent the wrong barrel so that had to go back. Other than that all I'm waiting for is the magazine and I can start building then cerakoting
