LET'S SEE YOUR WINCHESTER MODEL 21's

I shoot a Browning BSS 12ga, which is substantial enough to be comfortable for a 100 bird round of cays. For more delicate 12ga guns, the Kent 2 1/2" 3/4oz. 12ga loads are very soft shooting and break clays well at modest distances.

The thread I referred to mentions that the BBS is popular on the clay courses in the US.

Well, I kinda like the big coil springs in my Manufrance Ideal, designed over 40 years before the M21 was a gleam in John Olin’s eye. Manufrance encased those springs is as strong an action design as has been made. The only thing the M21 has on it is the increased leverage provided by the elongated action flats. IMHO. And it’s all wrapped up in a svelte round action.

But you are right, bluelynx, when you say each SxS was made for a purpose. The result is an incredible array of guns that can appeal to every taste, shooting style and quarry. I think, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this, that a big part of the fun is in discovering that variety. And can you imagine the prices if we all loved the same things?

Thank you Mister canvasback. I learned a new fact today. Svelte round action!!! I am glad the forum moderators have not noticed that gun #### talk you have just exhibited.;);)

Edit: The word I used was Parn.

Thanks.

Bill, don't mean to hijack the thread.....this is for bluelynx:

Is tat a Manufrance, Canvasback? Looks good.

Sure is Bill. An Ideal 6R EE Perfection in 12 gauge. Very unique engraving pattern. Only ever seen one other Ideal done in a similar style and that was a extremely high grade 16 gauge in France. I have yet to find a higher grade than mine in NA.

Can’t resist adding.......in case anyone thinks the Manufrance Ideal was some limited production specialty item......roughly 70,000 were produced up to the start of WWII. Production numbers after the war are not known.

That compares to the main production run of M21 up to the early 1960’s of 30,000 guns. Don’t know the number subsequently produced through the Winchester custom shop.

Both guns were available in 12 through .410 with the Ideal also being available in 10 and 24 gauge. And both were available in a multitude of grades.

This thread has been inactive for over a year so I thought I would try to revive interest again.
I found this 20 gauge M21 on an auction site a few weeks back. Its a two barrel set with vent ribs and excellent wood. The hammer price was $9000 US plus buyers fees etc.

Gorgeous!

I came across this cool Model 21 stock conversion video today...

Here's another M21. It's a 26", 12 gauge Skeet gun dating back to the 1930's. Looks to be a rather nice gun that fetched $3750 US plus buyers fees.

I just spotted this M21 at a US auction site and thought I would share it with CGN'ers. We rarely see high end M21's in this country so all the more reason to share this fine collectors piece. It's a 12 gauge trap gun built in 1941---its a 2 barrel set with the 30" vent rib barrels choked Mod and Full and the 26" barrels have had screw chokes added. The fine engraving and checkering was not done by Winchester, but rather by after market craftsmen. It has an estimated hammer price of $9000-$14000 US. If the gun was entirely by Winchester it would command significantly more.

Years ago I was fortunate to purchase a maple stock and forend for a 12 gauge M21. I suspect it was made years ago by Bishop or Fajen---it was semi finished and need final inletting to my M21. Also, it had a monte carlo comb that I had my stocker cut down to match the original walnut stock.
My M21 is a Tournament Grade Skeet gun made around 1932-33. And, it has a second set of 30" mod and full barrels.
So, here is my "new" maple stocked M21.

I knew a guy who was working for the accountancy firm that was helping close down the Winchester Canada office in Toronto when they were leaving the country. Guy told another friend that the Winchester head was offering everyone heavily discounted prices, I think 60% off wholesale, for the long guns still in stock (this was before any permits were required in Canada). Well, as my accountant buddy was walking through his front door after work the day I heard about this, his phone was ringing and it was me on the line asking if there were any Winchester 21s in stock, maybe forgotten in a back room? I said I'd take any number they had but apparently that number was zero. I just wish I could be certain my friend actually asked, I know he'd already said he didn't want anything and he was a never change his word kind of guy. But oh, what might have been.
