Just wondering, for folks who rebarreled from -06 to something more interesting, other than 7X57 and 9.3X62, what did you go to that required nothing much more than a new barrel? Any interesting Euro or Brit chamberings?

I've had 700 long actions done in 257Roberts, 280Remington & 35Whelen with no troubles.

If the action was a 98, then it would be a a Euro chambering.

My favorites are .280AI and .35 Whelen. I've yet to give a .338-06 a try though. You've got a lot of options on an '06-sized bolt face in a long action though, including wildcats on the .284 Winchester and 6.5 Weatherby RPM cases with their rebated .470" case heads and tons of AI versions which can be anything from yay to nay depending on a number of things.

If I had to pick a single cartridge to hunt with for the rest of my life it would be the 338-06.

Bull moose at ~200 yards. 210 TTSX @ 2800 fps. Bull went 50 yards and tipped over.

Everything based on 308/7.62×51. 7-08, 6mm rem, 243 win. etc etc.

Maybe with "modern stuff" that will work - for sure military Mauser 98 came with that size bolt face - can see the mods that Israeli's had to do to get dependable feeding from 8x57JS size magazines for 7.62 NATO - I have two Mauser 98 conversion to 243 Win that I simply can not get to feed properly - one is from an Israeli 7.62 altered magazine - I am using High Score single shot followers for now - is worse, in my experience with 30-06 length or longer actions - like 7.62 NATO into a M1917 magazine. I suspect the real issue is in the grinds for the feed lips on underside of receiver - but have not established that yet. So, for minimal fuss, OP should consider length of new cartridge versus length of action / length of magazine that he proposes to swap barrels on.

There are guides from oldtime gunsmith articles (NRA gunsmith guides come to mind, there are others) that detail the changes required to feed lips for these purposes. It is doable, I've had numerous Mausers and Enfields that fed well over the years, though none without some work. Modifying the P14/M17 to run large belted cases took the most work in my memory. - dan

8mm-06. I had one done many years ago. Smoked a few whitetail with it. Nothing fancy, but got the job done.
