100 Yard .22LR Challenge

What started out as re-sighting after having some contact between the barrel and the stock fore end resulted in shooting two targets.

The first target averaged 1.1223 with a best of 0.873" and the 2nd target being a 9-shot group in the ten ring measuring 0.75 . . . ballooned with one shot touching the 9-ring at 10:00.

The second target: 1.242 + 1.116 + 0.981
Average: 1.113

Rifle: Anschutz 1710
Scope: Sightron SIII 36X
Ammo: Remington Eley Match 1067 fps.
A little wind, variable with a probable high of 3 km.

Very nice shooting! Maybe try using some better grade ammo. Love the look of the gun and seems like it would be very comfortable. What tuner are you using?

:)... left kidney expensive and fliers included for 'free'. Oh well, it sat around for a reason. But I was able to prove, in the rimfire world, if you are trying to shoot itty bitty groups, look at the very top tiers of ammo... and then lot test. For my PRS shooting, this level of grouping will not matter so look forward to testing CX and Midas+ when new ammo gets to me.

The stock is SO comfy... thumb rest is perfect and much better vs the typical alum chassis. Ergonomics have exceeded expectations and anything you dont like, easy to fix with some lumber, epoxy and sandpaper.

This was the action/rifle I chatted with you before... They work, once you get through the poor QC (rough edges and such)... the barrels are really well manf, at least the 9 we have going right now. Just started playing with the shorty version (332X)... new trigger is harder to work on, but the barrel is removeable. Still seems to shoot well but being able to swap barrels is far easier now then with the 332As

20220825_190356.jpg

Makes for a great rifle.

For tuners, I have tested tuna cans and large muzzle brakes. The brake on the long barrel above is actually from a Win BOSS rifle. Just need a heavy enough weight and a way to keep in place once you find the right spot.

Took the challenge today at about 6PM, and I thought the wind had died down enough...but I was wrong!

Date shot: Sept 1, 2022
Range distance 100m

The Rifle and gear setup:
Rifle: Anschutz 1907, with BR wedge
Scope: Sightron 45x45 (target dot reticle), with bubble level.
Rings: Kelbly rimfire for Anschutz rail
Front rest: Caldwell Rock BR, with Protektor 3 inch flat bag. On left side of the front bag, not visible is a 3/4 inch spacer block that helps to make the stock forearm fit snug side to side.
Rear bag: Protektor, in riser box for extra height (this range shoots downhill).
Caldwell elbow rest bag.

Biologist_Rifle_100m_Rimfire_Challenge.jpg

Ammo: Eley Team
My rifle likes this ammo lot, and flier frequency is low (but I think I did get one clearly dropping flier (see the interpretation below).

Wind: This range had two wind flags I could see when on the scope. Reasonably steady from right to left, but I had to wait out the switches. But I did get caught by unexpected gusts which I failed to detect and wait for them to die down.

The wind-caused fliers and group patterns in these results were strung out to the left, and the light was right and I could see the wind flier rounds fly left when my reticle in recoil stayed centered. This is not an excuse, wind reading is part of the game and I read it wrong today.

Target 1 group = 1.287
Target 2 group = 1.482
Target 3 group = 1.624

3-group average = 1.464

Biologist_Target_100m_Rimfire_Challenge.jpg

Biologist_Rimfire_100m_Challenge_Largest_Group.jpg

Interpretation:
Target 1: Reticle hold on dead center of X ring. Waterline is really good, all in the 10 ring vertical. Steady wind pushed a nice 9-shot group to the left. The one flier far left was a wind gust, my fault for not detecting it and waiting.

Target 2: Wind increased and my hold for all rounds was on the right edge of the 10 ring, so wind was pushing the group about 1.5 inches left. The two far left fliers are a 2-round hole, both wind gusts, my fault for not detecting and waiting. The one hole in the 10 ring is an unknown. I speculate that the wind died down a little and it was not pushed as far. This group also had what I think was one true bad round flier which dropped down below the 10 ring waterline into the 9, because the reticle recoil was not where that round went. Eley team is good target ammo, but not the top tier and the usual one bad round per box is sort of expected.

Target 3: Again I held on the right edge of the 10 ring and the wind pushed the group left. Waterline is good in the 10 ring, but with more vertical which could have been my fault. The far left flier (which might just be barely in the 10 ring waterline) was again a wind gust push, my fault for not reading the gust.

Overall for the conditions I was quite happy with these groups. This rifle and lot of ammo are capable of better, so me the shooter needs to get better at wind reading, and there is some vertical spread in there that is probably my fault too!

Date shot: Sept 03, 2022 - 2nd try
Range: 109 yards

I wanted to see what the performance of the combo was with a little less wind so I went out again this morning. I apologize for the torn corners of my target. It is 65 lb cardstock. My stapler drives the staples in so deep that I can't get them back out. I tried with a small screwdriver blade today. I will have to use stickpins for any future targets.

I had not really planned to shoot these groups, dealing with some twitchy winds and this was at the end of a mostly centerfire range session.

Started by shooting at the KYL and that was pretty good so I gave it a go. Pretty happy with the results given the ammo and slight rush to shoot. (Those two fliers!)

MDT XRS stock
Sightron at 24X

Calm, 20 degrees, 100 yards and the occasional flyer.
Anschutz 1710
Sightron SIII 36 power
Remington Eley Match . . . 1067 fps

0.929 + 1.200 + 1.151 / 3 = 1.093
Shot two targets today and the second averaged 1.117 with the best measuring 0.911".
This is the same average as obtained with the Cooper Montana Varminter.
Toyed with taking the Remington 40XB . . . maybe next week.

Wood looks far better with the natural light.

I would like to make another entry in addition to the #17.
I got a brand new rifle and just got it sighted in.
It’s RimX action with PVA barrel on MPA hybrid chassis.
The scope is Minox ZP5, 5-25
With a MDT GRND-POD, and rear rest.
I used Lapua Center-X today.
The groups are quite consistent, it’s 1.12, 1.07, 1.02
Average = 1.07

New entry. Date shot Sept 8, 2022, at 8PM.

WIND: Zero wind. Flags were dead, the ribbons not fluttering. This is a rare opportunity at my local range to shoot with zero wind.
Temperature about 24C.

Ammo: SK Biathlon Sport. (This is my favourite training grade target ammo. My Anschutz and CZ's like this ammo, lot to lot. Never had a bad lot....but it is not without bad fliers as all ammo has, see results below).

Shooting style: Free recoil. My only contact with rifle was trigger finger pull and thumb on back of grip for resistance for the trigger pull. The 2-stage trigger 2nd stage is on its factory set at 125g (4.4 oz).

Gear:
Rifle: Anschutz 1907
Scope: Sighton 45 x 45 (target dot reticle), with bubble level
Front rest: Caldwell Rock BR, with Protektor 3 inch flat bag. On left side, not visible is a 3/4 inch spacer block that helps to make the forearm fit snug side to side.
Rear bag: Protektor, in riser box for extra height (this range shoots downhill).
Caldwell elbow rest bag.

Biologist_100m_Gear.jpg

HOLD of target dot: All dead on in the center of the "X" character, except for target #3 (see below for details). The 45 power Sightron target dot reticle is so fine that it can be placed on it precisely. (Its so good its almost cheating!.....but mirage can be bad some days, but not today).

Results: The best overall average 10-shot groups me and my rifle ever shot for this challenge, but 1 bizarre flier ruined the average!

Target 1 = 1.798
Target 2 = 0.938
Target 3 = 0.855

Average = 1.197

SK_Biathlon_Target_100m.jpg

The largest group was target #1 top left. You can see the one bizarre flier high right, totally away from the rest of the 9-shot group that is about 1 inch. I am fairly confident this was a bad round from the box, not the rifle, not the rest and bags, not me. Recoil was perfect.

For those viewers who have never shot with a scope of this magnification power like the Sightron 45x45, the tiny target dot can easily be placed on the center of the X on this target, the very thin cross hairs provide perfect spatial context before and after the shot, and the view through the lens is basically what you see on this screen. You can see the recoil track, and often see the flight of the bullet for the last few dozen meters, especially the fliers which show more trace because they diverge from the center line of sight, i.e., you get to see some of the diverging side of the flier's bullet trace as it curves away from the line of sight. So with this resolution in a zero wind condition, you usually know when it was a shooter error poor recoil management shot vs an errant flier that was bad ammo. I say "usually" because even with free recoil style, the shooter can do something wrong, something happens in the bags to change the recoil, or there can be a subtle gust of wind out of nowhere that can move a round's trajectory.

Largest group. (fricken flier!)
Sk_Biathlon_Largest_Group.jpg

Interpretation:
Sighters: Prior to shooting this target with the SK Biathlon Sport, the rifle had about 40-50 rounds through it from a clean barrel of a different brand (Eley Biathlon Club, which is whole other story). The first shots with the SK Biathlon were low and left. Clicking the turrets I walked them into a new zero for this ammo.

For Newbies reading this, it is common that different rimfire ammo shoots different points of impact, so re-zeroing is often required when switching ammo brands.

Target 1: Excellent 9-shot group with a defective flier round, (see comment above).

Target 2: Excellent group, but note that the group is migrating upwards from target 1. I have found that POI migration happens with every ammo brand after several dozen rounds, and my guess is that as the fouling increases, the internal ballistics are changing. The migration is not always upwards, it can be anywhere, but it does inevitably happen.

Target 3: The first shot was in the X ring. But shots 2 and 3 migrated upwards forming a worrisome triangle. I decided the migration upwards was happening, so I held the target dot at the bottom of the X ring for the next 7 shots, and amazingly the next 7 rounds shot high as predicted and made a bug hole above the point of aim. This hold change saved my group, or at least kept all hits internal to the triangle I had formed in the first 3 shots.

Hypothesis: Although I am in the "clean the rifle after every session" camp, this almost looks like the barrel after about 80 rounds was settling into a groove and now likes the internal barrel conditions. Maybe I should not clean it and see what it does for the next 100 rounds?.....or that is fantasy and Target 3 is a random effect, and the very next round could be a devastating flier and all the next groups will open up because too much crud is in the barrel! (such is the mystery of rimfire). :)

Monthly 100/200 Metre Rimfire shoot at Mission DRGC.
Wind was running both right and left, possibly as high as 4 mph.
Scores on the first target were 99-6, 96-6 and 99-3X.
When the wind was running one direction the hold off would be fine . . . it was the reversals and sudden stops that stung.
Rifle: Remington 40XB with a Lilja barrel and a Harrell Tuner.
Scope: Leupold 45x45 Competition.
Ammunition: Remington Eley Match 1115-02209-1062
Rest: From the Bob Goehring Estate, manufactured over the time he was a competitor and a rear sand bag.

Target #1: 0.713
Target #2: 0.889
Target #3: 0.886

Average: 0.823

A bit better picture but I need to get it outside.
Just needed to cast a bit of light on the subject!

A newb question: Whats with the tape?

Date shot: Oct 06, 2022
Range: 109 yards - switchy wind from 3-5 mph.

Rifle: Tikka T1X, factory action, barrel and stock. Area 419 weighted Arca rail and the cheapest Caldwell bipod I could find. Anarchy bolt handle. Kalix TekNik cheek riser.
Scope: Athlon Cronus on 29X
Ammo: SK Long Range Match - My worst lot - throws fliers 2 inches away from main group - usually 2 out of every 10 rounds.
Bags: Armageddon mini gamechanger used as rear bag.

Note: As you look at the target you will note that I shot it upside down so one of the 3 groups is in the Sighter box. I just wasn't paying attention and if I am DQ'd that is fine I am posting anyway because it may be of some interest.

Normally this ammo shoots 100 m groups of around 2" with quite a lot of fliers. With the use of a Limbsaver Barrel Dampener (a cheap rubber donut) and some other tuning tricks which I am not going to divulge this substandard ammo now shoots like this out of this particular rifle.

Group 1 = 1.061
Group 2 = 1.086
Group 3 = 0.976
Average = 1.041
