Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

Have wanted one for 30 yrs and finally found one at my LGS. It is in 7mm but would love one in .303 and 25-06.

Has anyone picked one up off Gunbroker at all? Looks like a good selection available in the USA. They shouldn't be too difficult to import either. I'm interested in a .405 or some other big sledgehammer. Not that I need one, but I sure want one.

Did they ever made one in 404 Jeffrey or 416 Rigby?

Yup

This is intended to be a complete caliber list of all Ruger No. 1’s that were commercially produced.
It does not include the “one of a kind” chamberings that have been made.

the 1s scream a Rim.... lol.

i like Rims on my 1s---- cant back that up much, only got the 1 Number 1.

from what ive seen on some #1s though, an it may take away what i like about the number 1 i own , is the compact thing it is, 22 inch tube i think, 'sporter' spec, ive seen some 7mags an 270s etc n they seemed to have a loong barrel on it- it is the horse for a course though i guess, the beauty is plenty of factory options chambered in cals with suitable barrels for any application , really....

the big bores typically get stubby , as my 303 is /feels.... certainly see attraction to large bore calibers in #1s

I would like to have the one I barreled in .45x2 7/8, forty-some years ago, but I don't reckon I really need it and don't even know where it is.

Prophet river have a few in interesting calibers in the used or consign pages!! But $2800 seem a bit steep, I bought my RSI 7x57 with 4 boxes of ammo for $2100 last spring!!

Ooof 3-4 years ago they were going for 1500 bucks

2800 gets you into the entry level of euro single shots…

Still a ruger no 1 fan but I balk at paying 2 grand for one tbh

Yeah I’m with you! Love the look and love them handling and all but it is starting to get a little steep! The problem with the euro single shots is they are hard to come by in Canada especially the ones at that $2800-3000 price point!

I have always thought that the #1S was one of the most sleek and beautiful rifles ever made...but it's funny how many warts there are on the #1 that prevent me from going completely overboard on them. I mean, the #1 is a really heavy rifle, which to me means that it it just isn't appropriate for many of the small cartridges that are so popular in it. I am not interested in a #1 in 7x57 or .243 or .22Hornet or .223 or any of those little guys, simply because of the weight.

But, on the other hand, the #1 is a gun whose design magnifies its felt recoil, at least for me. This means that cartridges like the .375H&H, a huge favourite of mine which I can shoot very happily in some guns that are much lighter than a #1, start to become uncomfortable for me to use in the Ruger. So not only the very small but also the very large cartridges don't work well for me.

I like the balance and appearance of a #1S with a 26-inch barrel, so the two I have now...a .300WinMag and a .45-70...both wear that tube length. The .300 in particular has become one of my favourite hunting guns; an incredibly versatile cartridge, in a very accurate rifle, with a barrel length that makes the most of its capabilities and a weight that is suited to it. The only problem I have with the gun is that it has become so beloved and has been used so much that it is starting to show its experience...but that's okay, those little bumps and bruises and scars make it less valuable on the market so I will likely never succumb to stupidity and sell it...and they don't affect its appeal to me in the slightest.

So as I downsize my collection, I think it unlikely I will find any more #1's that I can't resist...unless I find a nicely-stocked .44Magnum and/or unless Ruger sees fit to bring out a rimfire version.

Or...did Ruger ever make a #1S in .338WinMag with a 26-inch barrel? That might be a tough one to walk away from as well.

Or...a 9.3x74R might do it as well. The one I had was perfect except for a too-short barrel; a 26-incher would be sweet...

Or....?

Agreed a no 1 s 338 wm to match my 338 bolt gun would be hard to say no to. Working on a bolt/ single 8x57 j(r)s pair first though

I like the look of the No.1H models the best, I'd be happy with any of them I think. Have one in 458WM that was rechambered/bored to 50-140 coming my way from another member here, looking forward to getting it.

One of the 450/400's would be awesome, or one of 9.3x74R models. I don't really care for the models without open sights, just an aesthetic personal preference thing.

Well prophet river have one of each I think right now….

Some of those used/consignment NO1s at Prophet River have excellent quality scopes that sell used on here for $500 plus so that has to be taken into consideration for price.
