Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

An older friend was a collector of No 1’s. He had the same Highway Patrol model. Was a beautiful little thing and he had a wall full of them. He and his collection are sadly gone.

Are these some sort of commemorative edition or were they actually issued?

They were commemorative... I had one of them, but they are fairly useless little things and I am primarily a hunter. In a short range light and streamlined hunter, the No.1-A in .30-30 or .303 Brit are superior choices and every bit as "cool."

Yeah... but being able to use 38spl to plink cans at the cabin would be a whole lot of fun
- I know, there are cheaper options out there... but how much fun would that be!

I agree with the sentiment, but if it is a plinking gun, a falling block is about as annoying as you can get. The 77/357 or 77/44 would be a better way to go, and for considerably less money. I have had them all and that would be my take on it.

I understand as a hunter you would have little interest in this rifle cartridge combination. i have found it useful to rid my rural property of unwanted critters and in my opinion is safer to use than a larger calibre in the populated farming area where i reside. The .357 Ruger 1 was a commemorative issue, but it is my understanding that there were a small number of rifles issued without the commemorative roll mark on the receiver. Mine does not have the CHP roll mark. We all have differing reasons for what we purchase. I am drawn to some of the more obscure calibres and nice condition firearms that are somewhat rarer and harder to find.

I guess I fall in the niche-weird-slow-plinker category... :p

With Ruger having acquired Marlin... I have a secret pipe-dream of seeing a Marlin-Ballard getting resurrected... and since I'm dreaming, I'd also like it to be in 22lr with a set-trigger...

Hard not to like that, but 22LR? meh. What a waste of a wonderful rifle. 357, absolutely ;)

"Niche-weird-slow-plinker" category, lol? Count me in!

As much as I enjoy my backyard plinkers in bolt actions, lever actions, semi-autos, etc...a single shot will always be near and dear to my heart. And while .22lr is ideal for serious high-volume practice, I much prefer to do some casual "mini-big-bore" plinking or pest control with .357's, .44's or 9mm's.

Combine the two, i.e. a single-shot in .44mag, and you have my idea of perfection. I'm embarrassed to admit that I no longer own a single-shot in any of the handgun cartridges, but that will change...

You misquoted me... I said "as a plinker." As a hunting rifle, I love single shots of all varieties... and the No.1 is a favorite.

Would love one in 475, still dreaming of a 500 S&W.

There’s a 303 for what passes for a decent price on the ee right now, unless it’s been scooped up
