Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

Ouch, inflation coming to #1 sales too ... bought my safe queen 300wm version just over a year ago with scope and delivery for $1500. What a world. Now what might I pay for a .303 version ... the wife will never know

Some of those used/consignment NO1s at Prophet River have excellent quality scopes that sell used on here for $500 plus so that has to be taken into consideration for price. Recently picked up a 1A in .222 in their consignment listings and couldn’t be happier:)

Yeah for sure!!

Found it, 1S .218.

I think I need one last one… so I have a 7x57RSI, a 30-06RSI, a 9.3x62S and I think a big bore like 450/400NE… or 416rigby(I shot that caliber for the first time yesterday thanks to 65cutlass)! I know prophet have a 450/400NE in consignment…..

Big bore ruger no 1s are brutal

I wanted one in 458 wm until I shot one. Should have known they were bad if Douglas was telling me not to
do it.

Something seems right about that action in 303 or a nitro express caliber though. If they made one in 470 that would be tempting…

Thats an unusal one, and in a nice cartridge. Congrats. - dan

As a teen read an article on the .218 that still sticks in my head, from a worn out gun rag I’d read cover to cover repeatedly. It did that thing where one gets illogically transfixed and smitten with a historical cartridge that’s a bit obscure.

Then 20 years ago I had a 1B with extraordinary wood in .218, which I had to sell to fund school. This 1S is the best iteration of the .218 for me that’s extant (1A, though never made would trump it had it been).

As for which cartridge fits the No.1 best, I’d have to vote .303 overall.

If I was on the hunt for one right now I'd be looking for a .257 Roberts & a 22 Hornet. Or a 7x57, 7mm-08, or a 6.5x 55... My days of wanting the truly big bores is fading. Sharp recoil is getting to be a pia with older age. My .35 Whelen showed me that. Manageable, but about the limit I want to feel on my shoulder anymore. Stock geometry plays a big part I'm sure...

.303 and .450/400 for me. Rimmed cartridges that fit with the Rifles heritage. I’d also not kick a .257 Roberts,6.5x55 or .300 H&H out of bed for eating crackers.

I have a 9.3x74 now and It’s my favourite rifle I currently own

Had a 1- S in 338 WM. It needed accurizing ... but once that was done, accuracy was excellent. I found the lever would regularly catch on my clothes (while hunting) and eject the cartridge ...bummer. Sold it and now hunt with a bolt action (338-06).

As for which cartridge fits the No.1 best, I’d have to vote .303 overall.

Still got my consecutive pair & will probably never part with them. Got a grandniece & two grandnephews who are starting their journey into hunting; my No.1's will probably go to them when I'm done.

I saw a stainless and silver laminated one in .358 STA once and I thought it was the prettiest rifle I had ever seen in one heck of a thumper caliber.
