Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

I guess I fall in the niche-weird-slow-plinker category... :p

With Ruger having acquired Marlin... I have a secret pipe-dream of seeing a Marlin-Ballard getting resurrected... and since I'm dreaming, I'd also like it to be in 22lr with a set-trigger...

If that gun ever came back, I'd like to see it in 22 Hornet or 25-20/ 32-20 or some other cartridge like that. Classy rifle like that needs a classy cartridge!

Seems like they offered the 1-S in 460S&W... weird they didn't offer a 500 S&W?

Maybe because it’s a proprietary cartridge?

Maybe because of the size of the barrel or casing?

I’ve seen a few no 1 online modified to .510 cal safari cartridges though

Definitely can accept the diameter, the No.1H has been chambered in .416 Rigby of course which is much fatter than the .500 S&W. I could see there being a barrel profile concern, not in strength but just in weight as they only produce the set contours in the No.1. But since they’ve done the .475 doubt that too as the difference is trivial.

Since they’ve housed many an odd ball in the No.1, it’s probably just a matter of time til the .500 comes out through Lipseys. This said, sure seems like fewer and fewer are rolling out of the factory. Thankfully a dearth of them exist on the market for obscure interests like ours.

What is the diameter of a 458 wm no 1 h barrel?

They seem kind of front heavy to me, wonder if there’s enough meat on there to accommodate if they use the same profile for everything.

It’s been almost 20 years since the 500 came out, I’m not holding my breath. Not paying the 700 bucks reliable was asking to replace my H&R either

The Ruger no1 in 762 is going for $2275

thanks.
i dont think it cost me any to import, just a few permits..... ive been looking for a .30-30 model , but from what i can tell a real limited supply came to Aus.. the new ones advertised were $2800aud in 2018...
current 303 #1s are at $2200 2nd hand- this is about true for most $2500 common.. more rare stuff in the 3 mark..

i feel like the 762 isnt my jam in a Ruger 1 , kind of want a reasonable piece of brass to throw down the spout :) lock that lever and send a reasonable amount of lead down the hole... im finding it hard to 'beat' the 303 british combo..... because im using open sighted the minor accuracy /bore issue doesnt phase me, this would be true for any of these cartridges id run in #1 :)

i dont think i would scope one for a few years...

I have to agree on the Ruger no 1 in 303 especially opened sighted.I put one of the Ruger no I style rear express sights on it and call my poor mans Farquharson rifle

100% im tight for coin at present but longing for one of the peep set ups for the rear... oh myyyy

I love #1's, but...they are porkers, so to me that kind of rules out small chamberings. And, since they aren't saddled with the limitations of receiver length, it makes no sense...to me...to chamber them in short cartridges.

Now, they work so well with rimless cartridges that I can almost...almost...completely accept that design rather than the rimmed that are theoretically better suited to them. But there's no way I would own one in .308; 30-06 as a minimum, and a .30-cal magnum would be far better. Gun weight needs to pay its way by providing extra horsepower...and short cartridges need short actions or else they are somehow...inelegant...

A #1 in 7.62Russian? Nnnnoooooooooooo....

I'm not saying it makes sense; just an idiosyncrasy of mine, and not my only one either. :) But let's face it: nobody buys a rifle like a #1 strictly because of its functionality. We buy them because they make us happy while doing their jobs...whatever that requires...

.22LR would be good for me...is there any sort of rimfire conversion kit for the Ruger No. 1?
