Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Should make a cheese grater upper handguard.

You’re not the first to say this.
I’m personally not a big fan of the cheese grater. For some reason it just looks…cheap? I don’t know how else to explain it.
I’m also a fan of the whole “thumb over bore” grip, so that might also cause me some issues. Lol

Gorgeous grain on the grip!

That’s honestly my favourite one of the two.
I seriously wish the grain on the Dong came out as well as the grip did.
After going through this thread, I might be remaking the dong. I forgot about the MLOK inserts and now I really want to add on to this.

I browsed this thread a bit, lots of cool photos and favourable opinions.

Is there consensus by now about the general reliability of these rifles? They are service rifles, right?

Occasionally someone gets a flaky mag that mostly fails to lock the bolt back.... but that's pretty much it. Added bonus for hunters is they seem to feed SPs and HPs better then SKS rifles.

About to shatter the almost 200 pages of reasonable discourse with the following:

I bet you think about dong grain all the time don’t you buddy

I will see myself to the door.

Ive had a rifle that was made out of spec, the bolt hold open had to be modified to work.also jeard of others with the same issue

Kinda late to the game here fellas. Only picked up an SE folder a few weeks ago. This thread has been excellent as far as general T81 information goes. Just curious as what what you guys are using for chest rigs/panels/plate carriers? Whatever you're using to carry your mags, can you post it up please and give me some ideas of what's out there that will work well for Type 81 mags.

I'm hoping to pick one up too. Part of the reason I joined these forums. They seem to be harder to come by these days though.

Are you going to Ukraine?

I watched the market for a while and jumped on a rifle that was posted by a member here. He had it listed a little out of my price range. But i was fortunate enough that others thought the same thing and he ended up dropping his price after a little while. I took a chance and payed the same price that TI was selling them for brand new, (sans tax) for the rifle but it showed up in immaculate condition and I'm incredibly happy with the gun. Just take your time and something will turn up that's right for you.

Are you going to Ukraine?

Not this week, but it's hard to predict what the future will bring. :)

First range day with the rifle...got it roughly sighted in. Have some kinks to work out with the magazines

Do you find the mags lock in super tight and make it hard to release?

It was more with the pmags having the pins too high up, so the rounds have too much tension with all 5 loaded in there. It contacts the bolt so they either don't rock in or they do and it binds up the bolt.

Amazon.
There are options for the AK but I grabbed a classic surplus type 56 Chi-com chest rig for approx. $15 + shipping. I just plan on adding a buckle so I do have to tie the bottom strap.
Some people are adding velcro so they dont have to use the wood toggles and others are modifying the rig so that the pouches are sewn up as a panel that just gets velcro'd onto a plate carrier. The things are cheap enough you can experiment.

If you end up in Ukraine, good luck to you. I was there this time last year. I had the bad luck to blow out my knee while training with a volunteer brigade and am waiting for surgery, but hey at least I'm alive.
