Long story short, one of these had a lot more appeal than a current production 700 does, and yknow...we're kinda gun nutz.

If you had to pick a scope out for a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in 280 Rem, what would you go with?

I'm tempted to say Leupold FX-III, 6x36 or 6x42 but more opinions are always informative.

VX-III or VX-3 3.5-10x40mm and your good2go.
There are many flavors to choose from though, but I am a Leupold Union Thug Fan :)
Post the pic of your rifle when you gt it dressed up too please.

Thanks Rob, the versatility of the 3-9 sounds good too! And I like how light the Leupolds are.

I'll get some pictures for sure, its going to have to live with an old beater Burris FF II 3-9x40 for a while though :p

How do those stack up against the lower tier like the Vx-Freedom, freddy? and truly noticable difference? Besides not being fugly lol

I have never owned the Freedom but I have had some older VXII and VXI's. But what I like most about the 2.5-8 is how compact and light it is, would make a nice pairing for your light weight rifle

I have a VX-3i 3.5-10x40 CDS on my Mtn SS in ‘06.

Purchased based on members advice here and I’m happy with it. It sits in LW Talleys lows.

I've got a leupy 3.5-10x40 on my 280 Rem and it seems like a great fit to me. So something along those lines perhaps.
I really like the Swaro 3-10x42 I have on another rifle.

I’ve also have an older Bushy Elite 4200 in 3-9x40 thats probably slated for a Mtn type build in the future. In wouldn't hesitate to look at that brand/series either. I’ve weighed it in on my scale at just about 1.2lbs

Thanks all!

The Talley LW setup sounds like a really good idea. Usually go with Weaver aluminum bases and QD rings, but since there's no need to take the scope off anyway....

Didn't know the VX3 and above were a one piece tube either.

ShrtRnd, the 4200s have been good to me too! Never had an issue and like that LOW glass.

Dunno why I am so hung up on the 6x36 or 6x42. Not as flexible, but...

Talley’s = This is the way :)

That 4200 has seen a few rounds atop .270w, .300W and .300WSM setups over the years. It just keeps on going w/out skipping a beat.

Thats cool!

The tube length goes good for real long actions too, like a Win 70 or Rem 700. Thats quite a span from front to back.

Nothing wrong with a fix scope, simple, light, sturdy, nothing to really go wrong! That said I always liked the 2.5-8 for their lightness and how compact they are!
6x always intrigued me in a way that I wonder if they would be too much magnification at close range, like I side 75m ?

Although I'm partial to the VX-?? 2-7, 2.5-8 scopes, I think a VX-3 3.5-10 would fit better on that action length. They're still very light scopes, and paired with Talley LW rings it would suit the Remington mountain rifle.

I have a Leupold M8 6x that I'm not overly fond of. While I suspect it would be fine on a purely hunting rifle, I find myself wanting more magnification at the range, and missing the versatility of a variable.

Remington 700 Mtn LSS in 260, had a Bushnell 3200 3-9x40. Great little rig back in the day. Went to my daughter when I stepped up to a larger caliber for use in BC bear country.

The 6x42 is a far better scope than the 6x36 in just about every way, especially the eye box and light transmission. Also, a 6x42 with a turret is definitely a dirty trick on a pure hunting rifle. If you feel you need more X's, then the 3.5-10 is very hard to beat.
