Remington 700 Mountain Rifle scope choices

Nothing wrong with a fix scope, simple, light, sturdy, nothing to really go wrong! That said I always liked the 2.5-8 for their lightness and how compact they are!
6x always intrigued me in a way that I wonder if they would be too much magnification at close range, like I side 75m ?

You won't have any issues with a 6x at close range. The field of view is quite wide, which helps a lot. There is no struggle to find your target. They are brighter than the 2.5-8 by a wide margin as well, if you go with the 42, and offer better eye relief.

Long story short, one of these had a lot more appeal than a current production 700 does, and yknow...we're kinda gun nutz.

If you had to pick a scope out for a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in 280 Rem, what would you go with?

I'm tempted to say Leupold FX-III, 6x36 or 6x42 but more opinions are always informative.

I'd go with a Leup VXIII or VX3 in 2.5-8x36mm.

Thanks for your take on the 6x36 vs 6x42 Rman! When you say "a turret" you mean one matched to your ammo?

NAA, thanks too. Does that require an extended front ring?

I just put a matte Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36mm on a 1955 mfg Win 70 featherweight in .30-06, using standard #46 & #47 Weaver bases & Burris "Z" rings with the inserts that cradle the scope tube. Fortunately, the eye relief was right on as there wasn't much room to move the scope back or forth in that set-up.

With that particular scope, you may need an extension ring or base for the Rem 700 long action to get eye relief that suits you.

Whoa, thats a really nice looking setup. The 70 FWTs are classics for a reason :)

Nice that it worked out just perfectly for you too. meant to be I guess

I like the older Zeiss Conquest MC 3-9x40 on my light weight rifles. 16 oz scope and they come at a good price on the EE.

Thanks R, now I need to find me one 6x42! Gloss with German 4 reticle would be great!! If you guys hear of something g let me know!

The 280rem has some decent potential at longer ranges so I'd be looking at something with at least a 9x on the high end. The 4-12x40mm freedom is listed at 13.1oz, the 3.5-10 and 4.5-14 vx3hd are listed at basically the same weight (13.1 and 13.3 respectively), which is only a tiny bit more than the vx3hd 2.5-8x36 (11.9oz).

If one were to search this sub-forum under these topics…

- Sheep Rifle
- LW Mountain Rifle
- Ultra Lite Boomsticks
- Mtn Rifle
- 700 Mtn SS

You would find a ton of info to be had from Cals, Barrel Lengths to Scopes that could prove useful to anyone diving down the rabbit hole that is a LW/Mtn rifle head first.

How far out has 6x stopped being strong enough for big game for ya, Suther?

Thanks man!

Thinkin any of the suggestions here so far in a set of good, lightweight rings is a can't go wrong proposition!

for lightweight scope nothing beat a vx3 2.5-8x36 or 3.5-10x40 if you want to avoid the turret that can disturd your setting use a b and c reticle.

i do like myself the leupold german 4 reticle.

NAA, thanks too. Does that require an extended front ring?

You can get a CDS to match the ammo, or a turret in MIL or MOA. Just an external elevation adjustment, so you can dial for those longer shots, if required. You can get reticles in those scopes for bullet drop as well.

Not Suther, but you should easily be able to see an MOA target to 600 yards. A 10" gong gets hit regularly past that distance... depending on wind, of course. The lighting factors in more than the distance. This is on a hunting rifle, not a target rifle. With the right light, an animal can look huge in that scope at 600 plus. If grey and washed out, at the same distance, they can look very small. That's standard with any scope, though.

I figured! Just wanted to kinda see if this is coming from a hunting actual use perspective, or an "i've read/heard" perspective when the advice is given out lol.

600 plus is quite a bit past where I'll ever shoot at an animal. I can't see a 6x lacking as far as hunting goes, ever.

It sure wouldn't be my choice for bush hunting or for closer encounters.

I guess if you're in hand to hand with him, might be a problem haha. Or running shot at 20 yards or less. half the time my 3-9s are cranked to about halfway.

Like most people, I like the flexibility the variables add to the game.
I've got a Leupold 6x. PM me if you really think that's the way to go...
