Gas tool

Being used to operating the M14 / M305 family of rifles, i am applying the same mindset to the Templar in regards of maintenance of the gas system.

The M14 gas plug requires regular oversight and sometimes maintenance, it's the nature of the platform. The way designers adressed this issue is by creating a purpose built wrench/handle that was stored in the buttstock:

It's important for me to be able to service the piston in field conditions should the need arise. Following this mindset I created my own mini-wrench:

Ordered a 1/8 drive bar:

I cut one end of the bar so that it can slip out. I also got a 3/8 socket and taped them together to avoid loosing the socket.

Now I can clean my piston anywhere. I could even store it in the buttstock compartment of the Templar given I shorten the bar a bit more.

Cheers!

Just received my Templar today. (Ordered feb 28/2024)
Will be starting my review on it this weekend after shooting it for the first time, plan on doing 100-500-1000-1500-2000 round updates. Plus an initial review I’ll be posting in a day or two. First impression quickly though is very good. Packed solid, very little blemish marks at all, good thoughts so far. Even sent me a sticker!

Enjoy! Remember to keep the slot where the charging handle runs well lubed or it can cause some scraping over time.

I gathered up problems that I encountered and tips that I recommend for maintenance in this thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns...der_arms_templar_crusader_9_maintenance_tips/

The issue with the e-clip is no longer a problem in the Gen 2 Templar, but I don't know if they've gotten better at loctiting scews holding the trunnion plate.

Did they happen to include a manual with the Gen 2s now shipping?

In the box they give you a sticker, a well wrapped rifle, and a single piece of paper outlining the basic maintenance procedures with a QR code to scan to download the Manual.

I'm glad that's improved. I received a relatively poorly padded assembled firearm and the upper receiver that can swap out (Crusader Dual Caliber combo that was offered for a while with a 9mm upper and a 5.56mm upper) both in bubble wrap, a magazine (happily it was a Hera H3 5/30 mag, not the later weird looking 5/10 rounders) in a branded box and that was it - no manual, no piece of paper, no QR code.

I wonder if they've changed the manual for the Gen 2 - because the Gen 1 manual has a lot of paper space dedicated to the proprietary bolt hold open that was on the Gen 1 that would be pretty confusing for a Gen 2 owner.

I haven’t really looked into it as I’ve watched enough videos the basically rebuild this gun. It definitely is packaged better than the WK I had. Shot 50 rounds last night not one malfunction. Ran smooth, and I was really emptying out some mags as fast as the finger could go. (With a triggertech adjustable trigger)

Love the TriggerTech - can't sing its praises loud enough, except that it's spoiled me for a lot of other lesser-quality triggers on other firearms I own.

@memnoch - that's quite a clever tool you've Macgyverred together. I haven't touched my gas valve pin (as CA calls it) - I'm going to clean it and the piston at 2000 rounds, which I should reach in a few months.

It might be tough to break free after 2000 rds of baked carbon.

I noticed that CA used troumendous force in torquing the pin. (I guess some got loose) Mine (gen 2) required significant force to break loose the first time.

Now, no problem. The gas pin fits tight and dosen't get loose when firing.

I’ll be making that tool this weekend, great idea

Canada first ammo had a three day sale last weekend and I ordered the buffer tube Gen 2 Templar.

It appears to be stuck in line at Calgary PO behind all the Type 81s trying to catch a ride East.

Has anyone else had it where the edges of the ejection port gets banged up?

Templar gen 2 review.

Full disclosures, I special ordered this rifle from CA with a standard size barrel (not a pencil barrel)
Upgrade list;

Trigger tech trigger
Trigger tech 45 throw safety

Starting from the beginning, I ordered on Feb 28/2024. Received it April 10/2024….

Was told 10-14 days from order I would have it shipped, took a little longer than that. But… CA did have DECENT communication with me, now I will say, on April 8-9 I emailed them saying I was thinking about cancelling my order via visa, and all of the sudden the barrels had arrived and I had my gun 2 days after letting them know if my intentions. Now to back up CA, they did go more in depth with me telling me about how there’s lots of sanctions and the Canadian border with gun parts…. Due to our government…. And they really aren’t sure when they get parts anymore. They did tell me they’ll order a bulk order of barrels and be told my customs it’s cleared and shipping, then be told it’s delayed… so on and so forth.

I gave them some advice and said they should be more clear with their customers and come out and let them know that…. I probably would’ve been content with waiting even longer had I had know those reasonings. Instead most of the time they would just tell me it’s shipping in a couple days… with no hope. Past this point. I wouldn’t say CA is horrible to deal with, they’re a group of gun people like us trying to make some pretty awesome guns. I just wish they’d be a little more clear with their orders on what’s going on. No harm no foul at the end of the day they made it happen for me and I was happy about it.

As for the review of the gun, I have 150 rounds through it (will be doing higher counts and future updates)

Not one malfunction so far, with the light duty trigger I put in it, I can get rounds flying very very fast. It handles all of them, ejecting and feeding with lots of positive force. All mags I tried worked flawlessly
(Pmag Gen 2-3) and cross mags.

Some people have reported machining flaws with theirs. I am happy to say mine has ALMOST no flaws. It only has 1 hairline mark by the pivot point on the lower. Hardly noticeable unless you’re looking for it. Doesn’t bother me, may bother others. But not a deal breaker.

The gun is built solid, zero play between upper and lower, which I really like… trying holding a SVR2 or WK. You’ll see the difference.
The whole gun is built tight, solid, and very nice.

Some report their stocks felt cheap, mine feels great no complaints.

Mine came in a very nice box, with lots of bubble wrap between parts, packaged solid, came with a “Manual” which is only a single piece of paper outlining the basics before shooting (where to oil) with a QR code to scan for the full read. Not a big deal to me as all my other firearm manuals are collecting dust. The rifle came with a 10/10 cross mag.

They even send you a sticker!

My positives are;
-Very Reliable (so far)
-Very well built with tight tolerances
-controls are nice. Love the AR paddle

My negatives are;

-The front end of my ejection port seems to get a lot of damage from spent casings. I believe it’s because this gun is over gassed. I’ve ordered a upgraded stiff ejector spring in hopes it’ll eject the casings more to the 3-4 o’clock position, as this gun ejects at about a 1:30-2 direction…. Thus sometimes the casing will clip the front end of the ejection port leaving little markings. Not the end of the world for me as this gun would only look better having a “battle worn” look.

That is my only negative for this gun. (So far)

I really enjoy this gun, it’s everything I wanted, it’s reliable, handles fast shooting well, built solid, feels good.

I’d recommend it. Will leave updates as round counts get higher and things work in more.

A nice looking rifle. I'd buy a Gen 2 with Heavy barrel if I can find one in stock somewhere, and when I can afford it.

Any news on how the 762 x 39 Crucible rifle is doing?

I don't think such an animal exists, unless it was a custom after-market conversion or CA is doing stuff that I haven't heard about.

Reports on the Crucible aren't great so far. Feed failures and extractor issues:

Hopefully Wenchslaughter chimes in at some point with more info.

Update: got to 200 rounds just now. Had my first malfunction. A FTE (stove piped round.)
So far 200 rounds with 1 malfunction
