Russian SKS45 long thread.

nope, there is quite a few commercial ammo but they are not cheap about $15 a box.

Thanks Curtton...but $15 is cheaper than most .303, .30-06, 8mm Mauser and 7.62x54r I can find. Good to know it is commercial. Thanks

OK . So now I have one coming from SIR . Thing that piss's me off is go to SIR site . Find the SKS add . Nothing said about not in stock yet , actually worded like they are ready to ship . order on line no problem looks like they will ship next business day (transfer not withstanding) So now you think O boy My SKS is going to be here in a few days , Now I'm waiting for the inevitable e-mail from SIR thanking me for my order & by the way we don't actually have any yet & we don't know exactly when we will have them but we have your order & payment info & will bill you & send one some day !

Damn you! Damn you all to hell!

I just had to look at this thread, I just had to look…...sheesh!

I need another SKS like I need an enema with Tabasco sauce…

However, I just placed an online order for two.:D

I hope these ones are in very good shape and have some decent accuracy. I bought a 1950 Russian Viet Nam bring back about 15 years ago for $100, but traded it because it consistently shot minute-of-dinner plate at 100 yards. It was THE rifle that got me interested in; SKS’s, AK’s, and the 7.62x39mm cartridge.

I have a few Chi-Com type 56’s that are in excellent condition and all milled. I haven’t shot them yet, but now I’ll be able to so a side-by-side comparison of them with the Russian ones.

Thanks for the heads up!:)

I agree. While I like SIR, I orderred 54r ammo from them, knowing that everywhere else was held up because of NRCan, yet they processed the order and only stated later that they did not have any in stock. Oh well, I am not in a rush to get my SKS, considering I wasn't planning on getting one to begin with. :)

ya welcome . i like to point out that most russian SKS are refubished and part of the refurb process instead of re-blueing , they put black paint over the metal so its gonna be very hard to do a complete side by side comparison. you may be able to do a few parts like carrier , bolt and bayo if its not covered , russian laminated wood is great.

Yeah, the one I had came with a laminated stock that someone had painted a camouflage pattern on.

I actually meant a side-by-side comparison of accuracy at the range. However, I will be able to compare the differences in manufacturing. I am somewhat leery of the Russian SKS's since I already knew they probably saw service and were possibly refurbished.

Aside from the fact my Chi-Com's all have spike bayonets, I don't expect much difference from the Russian ones. As far as I know, mine were still being manufactured to the same specs the Russians had set down. It wasn't for a few more years before the Chinese switched to; stamped trigger-guards, pinned barrels, and fewer machining operations.

I do hope the Russian rifles have better wood though. I had to toss the stocks my Type 56's came with and replace them with the Chinese red fiberglass stocks. They look way better now and are more durable.

Original Russian stocks ( like the one I have) were made or Artic Birch, and the replacement stocks made of laminated beech wood or laminated Birch, both of which are Far superior to the porous Asian hardwood used on the Chinese SKS.

Also, those of you new to Russian SKS's, do not let the word "REFURB" scare you. From my research and experience with my own refurb Russian, rearsenaled Russian SKS's are top notch quality.

Now Frontier will have to drop their price. SIR's price is ample evidence that Frontier was set to make an easy 50% margin and now it's time for them to sharpen their pencil and re-calculate.

Contrary to what most people believe, a few hundred Russian SKS's will cause a glut on the Canadian market. Remember the "hot" Garand market on CGN last year? Even fewer Garands got imported and many are still available. Dropped the going price by a couple of hundred to boot.

Last year a Russian SKs would move at $350. This year: "Russian SKS for $200? Nope, not interested, already got one".

man!!! i almost fainted when i read this , why would someone do something like that when it looks beautiful as is? those stripe looks awesome, :D

refurb is a good thing cos from what i heard the work done is as good as if the rifle were new, the only thing i wish they didnt use were the black paint instead of re-blueing.

the russian artic birch and lam are much better .... and you using the red jungle stock is perfect solution to replace the crappy wood provided your chinese SKS was made in the during the vietnam war.

absolutely ..... 95% of the russian SKS are refurb so expect all of the SKS in the new shipment to be refurb and used thereafter.

Please stop this. I wasn't going to get another SKS but now all this banter has me going to SIR to pick up a Russian one....or two.

I've been considering getting my first SKS for some time now, and just ordered my first one from SIR.

Also, I want to thank everybody here, I find this forum extremely helpful.
