I'm sure that Thomas has at least some spelling skills. Which made him at least several times wealthier than you and has hunted in every part of Canada. Right or wrong in his caliber choices or opinions, he does have you beat several times over in lifestyle choices as well....no? He lives in a beautiful log house and you live in the ####ing "hood" of Lethbridge, Alberta?....

I enjoy the guy's shows. However, like or dislike this caliber and arguing it's popularity doesn't change how absurd it is saying the '06 is a close range deer cartridge. This is borderline moronic at best... and yet I don't think he's an outright moron and I strongly believe he must know different.
The only explanation worth a darn, is he is pushing the new short magnum cartridge theme to sell new guns to the same old shrinking crowd of customers. At best he's a shameless salesman telling a tall tale to try to make a buck for his show's advertising supporters.

Exactly. You know the saying, 50% of the people you meet are dumber than average.
I chatted with him briefly at the Montreal Outdoor show recently. He seemed like an alright guy, but he quickly moved the conversation into "sales-pitch" territory. I guess it might have had something to do with the Stoeger Canada dude standing next to him. It wouldn't surprise me if he had a list of 5 or 10 words that he was required to speak.
Seems to me the 30-06 has been a good short range (and long range) big game killer for about a hundred years.

I talked with Thomas Pigeon at Bass Pro Shop at Bass Pro Shop during the Hunting Sale last year. He was telling me at the time that he uses some larger bored cartridges for the TV; people want to see the animal drop on screen or get hit, run off, and die off screen. He was saying that it does not show up well to see an animal get hit and drop and flop around; it looks inhumane on screen.
Do not get me wrong, I do not agree with his statement that the 30-06 is a short range deer rifle; for some people (not gun nutz) that do not figure out their trajectories before hunting, the few less inches of drop of a 300 WSM may come in handy. I hunt moose with a 375 H&H; my 30-06 would work fine, but that is no way to explain another gun purchase to my fiance.
My fiance and I like the show, we watch every Sunday before I head for the pistol range. I am not 100% impressed with him whoring himself out, but it keeps the show on the air and we get to see hunting in Canada instead of all over the states. He asked me what I fed the 375 with; I told him I loaded for it. He groaned and said he was sponosred by Federal; I told him I could load for about 1/2 (or less) the cost of buying factory ammo and it kept me shooting. He conceded that it was better to be shooting than not.

All you folk who get to meet TP, do us Albertans a favor and ask him how you can get on one of those S. Alberta Mulie "management" hunts that he filmed.
As a resident, I need to be a priority 4 to hunt that zone and to my and everybody I've talked to including his outfitter's knowledge, there is no buck management program in place in that WMU.
Last time he was out here he refused to answer questions about this hunt but maybe he's more comfortable talking to people who were not aware that he is full of BS?

I did not think to question him on any of his hunts too much. If you feel that his hunt was less than legal, this is the assumption I am getting from your comment, have you called the NR officers out there to report it? I am not being nasty; if you think he may have broken the law, I feel the authorities should be informed if it is a concern to residents out there.
I like seeing Canada from a hunting point of view; as for waht he says, I am more likely to listen to people on here than him just for the fact that I will get repsonses from different individuals (most not selling em something) and it usually comes from experience.

And that goes for those who have their "own" shows, whether hunting or fishing.

The 30-06 is a great round. It excells for most of NA, and is adequate for the larger bears.
Game being lost has nothing to do with the caliber. It's shot placement.

I don't know this "Pigeon" fella and at first I took his remarks to be a slight against my stable of great shooting 06's, but then I got to thinking...most if not all of my animals have been short yardage shots (less than 200 yds) so maybe he could be right.
I've decided in the coming hunting season that I will endeavor to take my animals cleanly by snapping a large sized mouse trap on their 'nads rather than risk losing the animal with a shot from my ineffective caliber choice.
Might even try to get my own show...

No I'm not suggesting his hunt was illegal. He ground a herd of very small mulie bucks up against a highway and killed one. He called it a "management buck" becuase he was too embarrassed to say he stuck a small one for the "kill shot" his show required.
The man simply lied to those who don't know any better. Not a quality I appreciate in any man.

You know of course that it's not personal and that I of course don't give a ####. I pretend to be sitting around a campfire with you buddy and discussing our opinions. I'm not that good at internet parle, I'm more of a hands on kinda guy....speak my mind so to speak. So what if Thomas ####ed up, I'm totally in agreement with Lazy Ike's argument concerning the cull tag, but boyz...it's our only Canadian hunting show. Why don't we try and culture it rather than put it down. Perhaps if some of those offended types were to email Thomas and point out what ails them, he might be reseptive to listening. We do have bargaining power you know...after all Star Choice did put Wild TV on seemingly after some pressure. So rather than #####ing and complaining why not support our Canada in the Rough show. Pharaoh, what's your problems anyways? you have a good following here on CGN, no need to put down one of our hunting advocates to get your ratings up Actually, now that we have access to wildtv, there are several Canadian hunting shows. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching CITR Sunday morning. But I enjoyed it a whole lot more before I watched the pheasant hunting episode awhile back. Gitrdun, do you hunt pheasants? Your walking along a grass edge. You take one more step and a rooster busts up from your feet, scaring the s#it out of you, but you regain your composure, throw your shotgun up and hopefully hit the bird.
Now, in the land of CITR:
The hunters are walking foward across the field. The camara is about 10 or 20 yards back. One hunter yells "There's one!" And from the top of the camara shot, you see a rooster flapping like it's ass is on fire. Yet the bird (Which entered from above) is not gaining alltitude. Rather it's coming down at a fairly good speed. The shooter fires the first shot and misses. The bird is still coming down. It's now only a few feet above the ground when the second shot rings out and the bird turns into a puff of feathers.
And that, my friend is what I have against the show. Did you ever see the show "The angler and Hunter" before they got the new, younger host? The old fellow, and I appoligise for I cannot remember his name, was a very likable guy. He wen't out with a camara crew. At the end of the episode if he didn't get a buck, it was ok. He talked about the great time they had on the hunt, spent time with friends and it was an enjoyable half hour. Now they got a new host. The very first episode I saw of that show was him firing a shot at a black bear running from right to left at full trot. His shot fired as the bears ass was the only thing left seen, and in that split second, I swear that's what he hit. I don't recall if they did get that one or not, but that's not the point. The new show emphisizes the fact that you have to have an animal down in front of the camara in order for the episode to be worth watching. I liked the old show because it was more real and down to earth.
And years back, I'm going to say it was our "countries sportfishing" show, no names. I heard the stories of one show getting busted by having a scuba equiped diver hooking trapped fish under water and the hosts reeling them in. I say that particular show because after that, the show went off the air for awhile, and years later when it came back, one host went his own way, and it was never the same since.
My little rant here is because this type of behaviour does no good to anyone. It makes hunters and fishermen look like idiots and barbarians, and it assumes were stupid enough not to catch on. That is insulting. Yes I should be more supportive of any publicity we get concerning television, but it's not right. And once I see somthing like that, well, I'm ignorant sometimes. Nothing personal.
