The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

What’s everyone using for a optic on their Ruger Scouts, I’m looking to swap what I have on my .308 onto a different rifle and am undecided on what to use.

Currently have a Nikon 2-7x32 with a bdc reticle, I like the size and mag range. Have hunted with it for the last 2-3 years, thinking 2-10 might be nice. Would like a reticle that’s not cluttered but a couple hash marks would be nice for hold over reference.

Not in a rush as the current setup is zeroed and I’m not looking to swap anything till after hunting season.

Butcherbill I got mine directly from XS Sights about three years ago. They still ship to Canada.
If you want to pay an outlandish price for one, Amazon has them listed as shipping from a second party vendor.

So even with a 20% discount promo from XS’s sight it was still more expensive than ordering from Amazon Canada, between exchange rates and shipping it wasn’t worth it. So I sucked it up and ordered it from Amazon, at least they had a bit of a discount and free shipping.

Wow! I'm going to have to dig up my receipt but I know mine didn't come close to the Amazon price even with the exchange rate and shipping.
Anyhow, they're a great sight. It should do you well.

I have a 3X32 Nikon Tactical on mine. Nice and compact. I like it but a variable would be handy in some cases.
Been considering a Leupold Mk 4HD 2.5X42 Iluminated.

Is what it is, have one on my .308 and it’s great. Just picked up another Scout and don’t want to go with a scout scope on it as well, sometimes you gotta pay to play.

I think I’m going to swap a couple existing scopes around and see how I like them on the Ruger’s, I’m tempted to try a 2-12x42 Athlon. Although Primary Arms has a couple 1-6x24 or 1-10x24 options that look interesting, I’m already set up for 1” tubes and would have to buy 30mm rings on top of scopes.

Been looking at Vortex and Burris as well, both have a reticle that I’m looking for. Just can’t find anywhere local that has either, would like to look through a couple first. Vortex has never wowed me in the glass dept.

the XS rail is a great addition.
running a leupold vxr 1.25-4 with warne qd medium rings in the regular position.
the scout set up just doesn't work for me.
It didn't work for me either, which is why I went with the low magnification Nikon.

food for thought!

These rifles have wood stocks and the article is in the Ottawa Citzen

Stocks on new Canadian Ranger rifles are cracking and need to be replaced

Has nothing to do with Ruger.
Yes, however it is interesting since they have wooden laminated stocks which a lot of Ruger GSR's have, also I was not aware that the c19 is also used by other branches of the CAF, however they have synthetic stocks like some models of the Ruger GSR. Also the Ruger was originally a candidate instead of the TIkka, however I believe Ruger would not give a production license to Diemenco

I still don’t see how one has anything to do with the other, lots of rifles have laminate stocks that haven’t failed.

The glue wasn’t up to snuff or the finish wasn’t thick enough, or they were made on a friday. But they weren’t made by Ruger.

I'm sure they were hurried to meet either a contract or budget deadline. Civil sevants can put pressure on contractors that become a liability. My guess is #### ran downhill and the wood had a higher moisture than ideal for the application. This is speculation on my part but others have had a decent track record with laminated stocks. Not my preference but serviceable if done right I suppose, but are they suitable for long service cycles in the field?
Or possibly a process test to see where the limits are?

Im a big fan

Don’t really like the LER scope concept so I rebuilt with a Nightforce 2-10x scope.

Accurate and precise. Have shot during PR classes out to 600m.

Longer groups strings than 3 rounds open up significantly however. Drawback of a pencil barrel…

But it’s lightweight enough to always carry.

Weird they didn't just go with a plastic stock for the Ranger rifles. Lighter, cheaper, and simple. And if it's a good quality plastic stock, they are very rugged. Even though I am a bit of a snob when it comes to synthetic stocks (I like Macs etc) I cannot deny many good quality injection molded stocks work very very well.
