What's a good affordable must have pump shotgun? Alien defese/general purpose

Another vote for the Supernova, there is a 14” version. I just picked up the 14” tactical with collapsable stock and am loving it so far, smoother in operation than my 870 but more $. Watch a few reviews and you will likely agree it’s a sweet thing.

Yeah starts to get outside of what I want to pay. ~ 600$ max.

Here ya on the cost. Bare in mind it comes ready for the HD portion of your needs so saves there but maybe not the best general purpose. I guess it depends on what’s job 1 for your purchase.

Yeah.... I went from just buying a gun that goes boom to spending a bit more now... but also don't want to spend to much. It's just to add to my collection I guess and range fun, and since it's a shotgun it's good for defense. Eventually I'd like one gun from every type (rifle, shotgun, pistol, etc)

With that 590 Shockwave and Stock from the same store (It's back in stock now) I'm at total 640$ (there's 60$ of shipping alone). I guess my new budget is 640$ now.

For a while during the WOT, shells loaded with a slug and two 00 Buck pellets were seen around, now I don't see them so are they still available here in Canuckistan? What I found was that the pellets very reliably stayed on target close to the slug. Perhaps it was the shot cup at work there, although the cup never made it to the target at the distance I was shooting. I had the idea they were hiding in the hollow end of the slug for quite a ways downrange.

Well I called the store and the black Magpul SGA is out of stock afterall (The shipping costs would have been the same). And they even told me shipping was actually 70$. So then add another ~ 20$-30$ shipping for ordering the stock from another store. Ehh, I just have a hard time paying that much for shipping this so I guess I'm back to square one.

I'd get the Mossberg Maverick 88 Security for the price but you can't change the forend on that, if I don't like it I'm kinda SOL. So I told myself maybe the 500 but now I'm learning the Magpul forend I may want doesn't even fit on 500 anymore since like 2-3 years because they changed something for cost cutting. Also I thougt the 590 had metal trigger guard, but now I'm reading it's only 590A1? So... what are the advantage in features from 500 to 590?

I'll look at what the websites that offer free firearm shipping currently have, maybe it shall be a Remington after all.

If you are thinking "Home Defense" a cheap Churchill will do nicely but more important is that you know what you can and should and/or should not doo if you ever get into such situation therefore I strongly recommend you purchase and read several times the Book called "No more Mr. nice Guy" by Barry Holland.

Cheers
Trust your life to a $200 Turkish pile of sch.itt ?
That should be a hard no for everyone.

Benelli Supernova :) you won’t be unhappy, lighter in wallet but buy once cry once you know.

Ma
Ok all I appreciate the comments, As long as it's not a pile of crap I'm happy. Since it's my second gun and introduction to shotguns, I'll probably go with the Maverick version of my liking and I can see from there.

With that said tho, as I'm learning with shotguns, looks like I need to decide if I want rifled or smooth bore. Can I shoot both slugs and buckshot/birdshot no matter what and it's just more efficient for one type of ammo?
mav 88 survived 500 roiund burn down on TFB. its a solid shotgun. Im looking at Moss 590a1 OR Benelli Super Nova

Man, maybe. How's the gun overall out of the box as is? The stock is great and forend? I definitely do not want a pistol grip.

If I get that, it could fit in my budget if I don't need to add much to it. Only shell holder, but I'm leaning to those velcro things on Amazon by Elite spanker

EDIT: Oh I realise I was cheking the Nova as well,

Don't get me wrong, if I'm getting the Shockwave it's to add a stock. The only reason I'm considering it is because from my POV, I can now get a Mossberg 590 for ~ 150$ more than a Maverick 88 at that discount price with that deal. I definitely don't want freehanding shotgun like that. And since I want a Magpul stock, why buy one with a stock I'll gett rid off.

And my understanding the only difference with Shockwave is reduced barrel lenght and grip (and differnt mag tube to match reduce barrel). As long as I don't mind barrel swapping, I think it will be a nice package? Only thing I dislike is the bead sight, never used one but if I'm shooting a short shotgun I'm sure it'l do fine.

I hear you, and we all have a budget to consider. Re: the bead sight, if we're really splitting hairs...for an experienced shotgunner, a bead sight (alone) on a short barrel should be workable with close targets. Beads were really designed for use on longer barrels. The barrel length + a vent rib (often) + that simple bead made for an efficient way of hitting even moving targets. Probably more accurate to say ESPECIALLY moving targets.

I think with shotguns, you really have to look at the end use/planned use then work backwards. Barrel length, choke (or lack of), sights, vent rib=all play a role in how often you're going to hit your target, and at what distance/speed. In my earlier comment, I mentioned taking a used 500 over a new 88, but I should have added that I've also heard nothing but good things about 88s, and they're known to be real workhorse shotguns. Unless you're after a tactical-looking end result, these combos are worth considering if you think you'll want to shoot some clays or possibly even having the option to hunt with it. I don't shoot as much shotgun as I'd like to, but even when I did...I doubt I put enough ammo through my gear to ever stop one of these.

I've owned a couple of 12.5" barrel pumps over the years, and even though the cool factor was high..the results were never stellar. And they were louder. lol Novelty wore-off for me, but I still get it. I've been most successful hitting moving targets with 28" barrels, 26" a not-too-close second. Shortest I'll use on moving targets is 18.5" but even then, likely to be #6-#7-1/2 and targets inside of 20 yards, 15 if I can get the shot off fast enough.

Just a few more angles/experiences to consider maybe?

I've always wondered if I'd dig a 20ga "fun gun"/range toy. Something I could shoot more/little less punishment. This is the one I'm talking myself out of daily;

Well it’s a Benelli so build quality is high, operation is smooth, sights are great. The mag cutoff is a neat feature, not sure I’ll use it but maybe ... Pretty perfect for your HD requirement overall. Maybe not the aftermarket support level of say the 870 but still robust. I also find it telling that several military’s use it including the French who are using 3 versions, with a long barrel version for drone defence.

Benelli nova... much cheaper than a beretta 1301 mod 2 from irunguns.com the proper version

Or keep saving your money for the 1301, it'll be cheaper in the long run

There is an amazing deal at wolverinesupplies.com right now for a standard black or cerakote mossberg 590 shockwave for $399.

Will need a decent stock it though as it's just a nub handle thing. I bought two of them a week ago and put a magpul sga stock on one and a mesa tactical/magpul set up on the other. Note if you want to run the magpul forend on these the do need a little bit of dremel work. Great shotguns though.

Edit: looks like the black ones are sold out but there are some of the grey cerkote ones left
Thanks for the heads up on the sale - great deal.

Okay so I went 180 from my original post....... I ordered a Benelli SuperNova Tactical 18" with ghost rings and stock. Well, I'm going to pick it up at Cabelas tomorrow, if that doesn't work I'll order ship it. Screw it I guess, it's going to be a nice shotgun. Only thing I dislike seems like is the mag tube capacity but eh oh well, more reason to have a side holder.... which brings me to that, unfortuntely seem like no choie to buy a 150$ holder bbecause the way the receiver is made can't fit a lot on a velcro card. I know I can upgrade mag tube as well but $$.

You won’t be disappointed that’s for sure. You started with a great base and now just take your time and upgrade as budget allows. I was concerned about the capacity but I figured if ever needed, I don’t suspect 12g 00 buck requires much in the way of follow up you know ;)
