Don't get me wrong, if I'm getting the Shockwave it's to add a stock. The only reason I'm considering it is because from my POV, I can now get a Mossberg 590 for ~ 150$ more than a Maverick 88 at that discount price with that deal. I definitely don't want freehanding shotgun like that. And since I want a Magpul stock, why buy one with a stock I'll gett rid off.
And my understanding the only difference with Shockwave is reduced barrel lenght and grip (and differnt mag tube to match reduce barrel). As long as I don't mind barrel swapping, I think it will be a nice package? Only thing I dislike is the bead sight, never used one but if I'm shooting a short shotgun I'm sure it'l do fine.
I hear you, and we all have a budget to consider. Re: the bead sight, if we're really splitting hairs...for an experienced shotgunner, a bead sight (alone) on a short barrel should be workable with close targets. Beads were really designed for use on longer barrels. The barrel length + a vent rib (often) + that simple bead made for an efficient way of hitting even moving targets. Probably more accurate to say ESPECIALLY moving targets.
I think with shotguns, you really have to look at the end use/planned use then work backwards. Barrel length, choke (or lack of), sights, vent rib=all play a role in how often you're going to hit your target, and at what distance/speed. In my earlier comment, I mentioned taking a used 500 over a new 88, but I should have added that I've also heard nothing but good things about 88s, and they're known to be real workhorse shotguns. Unless you're after a tactical-looking end result, these combos are worth considering if you think you'll want to shoot some clays or possibly even having the option to hunt with it. I don't shoot as much shotgun as I'd like to, but even when I did...I doubt I put enough ammo through my gear to ever stop one of these.

I've owned a couple of 12.5" barrel pumps over the years, and even though the cool factor was high..the results were never stellar. And they were louder. lol Novelty wore-off for me, but I still get it. I've been most successful hitting moving targets with 28" barrels, 26" a not-too-close second. Shortest I'll use on moving targets is 18.5" but even then, likely to be #6-#7-1/2 and targets inside of 20 yards, 15 if I can get the shot off fast enough.
Just a few more angles/experiences to consider maybe?
I've always wondered if I'd dig a 20ga "fun gun"/range toy. Something I could shoot more/little less punishment. This is the one I'm talking myself out of daily;
