What optic type to put on a "General" or "Ranch" Rifle.

In case anyone was wondering, this is what I went with. 1-10 SFP optic. Really like the cross hair and red dot in it. Would like to go with some lower rings but the giant knob on this rifle already hits the throw lever, so I might need to take off the throw lever or swap the bolt knob.

Hard not to look at the vx3hd 1.5-5 and 2.5-8 also, I have the 1.5-5 on a ranch.

Trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 green mildot would be a nice one too. Did lots of work on my ranch with one.
I have hte 2.5 to 8 on a ruger guide gune in 30-06
it fit into the lower rings which is nice, and is really great all around. subtle zoome ring knob and zero lock
on the CDS dial

i have the 1.5-5 on another bush rifle

I think you made a good choice. At lower power you will have a huge field of view. I put an old Japan made Tasco 1.5 x 5 on a rifle of similar age; no problem putting tight groups on paper at 100 yards.IMG_4572.jpg

If FFP isnt 100% necessary, try the new Vortex Viper HD. The 2-10 and 1 of the 3-15 offerings have a bdc reticle with an illuminated dot. I have the 3-15, and it was perfect 2 weeks ago in NL on a moose hunt. If you want to stay FFP, the PST Gen 2 in either 2-10 or 3-15 would be a good choice. I sold my older Strike Eagle 3-18 for the Gen 2 3-15, and have no regrets.
Question for you, does your illumination on the reticle have a noticeable glare on the higher settings? Just got mine and noticed it when I looked at it at home.

The original idea of a Ranch rifle included a 'scout' style scope almost by definition. I'd never found one that I liked, perhaps because the notion isn't particularly popular, until I stumbled on the SAI 6 1-6 x 24 scope from SAI Optics, the version with a rapid aiming reticle (available for calibre .223 or .308) is well worth going over budget a bit for, IHMO. From Armament Technologies and made in Canada. Superb scope.

Not that I've noticed. That said, I usually only have it on half power at most, just enough to see the dot but not so bright that it gives off glare or a slight halo effect. I played with it quite a bit at the range when I first mounted and zeroed it, and did find that it was a bit too bright, for me anyway, at the top 2 or 3 settings.
