Quad Rail CQB M4'ish Project Rifle - "TROY" BUIS added

Shot the rifle today and had a hoot. Took out the CST bolt open system and the rifle ran alot happier...bummer.

No feed or jams over 75rds fired fast. Love it.

The open sights hit just a bit low but work great at close range. Nice that they can be used while the dot sight is still in place. Might have to grind down a bit of that front sight.

Here's my before pics (on top of the deep freeze, I need to build a proper bench in my next house). That's a GM 16" barrel if anyone is interested.

Enjoy the sanding. I was going to install my GM pipe too but saw how much work there is and quit. Maybe this summer but for now, the stubby is working great. '

Looking forward to seeing the rig finished. Painting?

Jerry

I got most of the sanding done and then quit. I took off a bit of my one thumb from holding the sand paper on a dowel and said pee on it. I need new rings now because the scope does not clear the front rail. It's kind of front heavy with the GM barrel. I don't think I'll be painting it. I like black.

Pushed about 1000rds through the rig today. What a hoot!!!!!

Wished the CST can be modded to work but not the end of the world. The BC hot lips mags were working really well. The ramline 50rds not so, but having double the horsepower makes up for a few shortcomings.

The open sights are definitely shooting a bit low so need to adjust that front post. The dot is such a hoot making 100yd plinking a no brainer. Just put the dot on top of the target and let rip.

I haven't shot this much rimfire in years. Had a blast plus spent about the same as 2 boxes of 223.

Gotta like that...

I bought a set of Leupold Rifleman high rings today (medium in the pics above) and they are not high enough. The front of the scope just sits in the top rail. Any other mounting suggestions?

Edit....I saw some EOTech knock offs on ebay. Has anyone used one of these and care to comment?

It's touching the top rail (without the plastic rail cover on) when I tried the high rings.

Edit....that mount wouldn't work. The top rail is part of the quad rail and the VQ part would not mount to it. It's made to attach to the top of the 10/22 receiver. I did find some 1/2 inch rail risers in the States though.

You can get some super high rings from Burris but likely the risers are the way to go. The rails are not designed for large objective scope bells. Usually not the optic choice for a tacky rifle of this ilke.

Well I found a set of rings that works. And it looks GHEY!!! But the cheek weld is perfect, and I guess that's all that counts. They are Leupold see through mounts courtesy of Frontier Firearms (one of our sponsors) and the price was good. If I put the top rail covers back on it might look a little better. I think the next step will be a laser, then a Fenix light and then a different type of optic. I might as well use what I have and replace that last. At least this way I can see the hit on 100 yard gophers.:D

A tad on the weak-wristed side, but the scope height is decent!
Personally i'd mill out the rear section of the forward rail(can't use it anyways) and mount the scope as low as i could.

That's a very good point but...it sounds like work and the cheek weld is perfect as is. A very good suggestion though.;)

The more work you put in,the more unique it is ;)
As long as it is comfortable to shoot, who cares if it's not the best looking it could be.
The best looking guns are sometimes the crappiest shooters.

Like the AR, this flat top layout needs a very tall ring to get proper eye alignment. Look at my pics and you will see the aimpoint is in very high rings. It is the perfect height for heads up viewing.

The BUIS are quite tall when used. you do need to scrunch your head down a bit so not as quick and natural as the dot.

A low mounted scope would need the stock to be above your shoulder for you to see through the scope.

Pretty typical of straightline stocks.

I'm getting scared removing the material from my Tapco stock to fit the rails.

I used a stone wheel on a drill to start. I'm going to a flat file and heavy grit sandpaper next.

I've been trying the fit often and there is still way too much material in the way.

The take down screw hole was off by a few mm's as well.

Back to work....
