So I've toyed with the 7.62x39mm in a Bolt rifle for the past few years, i was impressed with it for the smaller deer species, an careful with it on the larger deer species- particularly the Female sized animals. it worked fine with the 150gr reloads at 2200fps.
My partner is shopping for a rifle, one that we can have fit her well from the get go firstly, then worry about the calibre- for our Regs we need to be over .270 calibre for the big deer species.... an only .243 calibre for the smallers -- (there may or may not be a minimum weight projectile reg in there somewhere - that was 130gr /270)
Wanting shorter barrelled rifle with lower recoil, we had originally set up for the .308, an i downloaded it to 2200fps an then we are up on 2400fps now with 150gr - so essentially between a 7.62x39 and 30-30...
So here we are thinking about the Ruger Ranch gen 2 rifle, an it is available in .350 legend and 300 blk .... and the 7.62x39!
with what both seem to be doing around the same velocity- being suitable for 200meters on Deer, i just wonder if its a path we should investigate more?

she will seldom ever shoot over 250 meters !
targetting meat deer, mostly hinds say-
mostly ambush style hunting but also still hunting, so going for shorter barrel for field use, less weight over the front etc

im wondering if we are putting too much thought into the 308- when these other ones could fit the purpose quite well? what do you say about it?
