So I've toyed with the 7.62x39mm in a Bolt rifle for the past few years, i was impressed with it for the smaller deer species, an careful with it on the larger deer species- particularly the Female sized animals. it worked fine with the 150gr reloads at 2200fps.

My partner is shopping for a rifle, one that we can have fit her well from the get go firstly, then worry about the calibre- for our Regs we need to be over .270 calibre for the big deer species.... an only .243 calibre for the smallers -- (there may or may not be a minimum weight projectile reg in there somewhere - that was 130gr /270)

Wanting shorter barrelled rifle with lower recoil, we had originally set up for the .308, an i downloaded it to 2200fps an then we are up on 2400fps now with 150gr - so essentially between a 7.62x39 and 30-30...

So here we are thinking about the Ruger Ranch gen 2 rifle, an it is available in .350 legend and 300 blk .... and the 7.62x39!
with what both seem to be doing around the same velocity- being suitable for 200meters on Deer, i just wonder if its a path we should investigate more?

she will seldom ever shoot over 250 meters !
targetting meat deer, mostly hinds say-
mostly ambush style hunting but also still hunting, so going for shorter barrel for field use, less weight over the front etc

im wondering if we are putting too much thought into the 308- when these other ones could fit the purpose quite well? what do you say about it?

The one that pops into mind is a Rem model 7 in 7mm-08. Ammo is not as common but if I wasn't such a 308 fan that's what I'd look for.

if this isn't a joke/troll post, you are GRAVELY overthinking this. Neither you, or you "partner", are snipers. A bit of recoil wont hurt either of you. You're hunting deer in Ontario, not shooting terrorists in the Kunduz province.... get a rifle that fits the local rules, carry it, hope for a deer to walk out in front of you and and your "partner", and shoot it in the chest. Done.

Get a .308. Get a 30-06. Get a .270. Get a .243. Get a 22-250. "Just do it".

I got a 350 legend , cva scout . got a buck at 50ish yards , nice to shoot , recoil milder than .243 . Cheaper ammo . $18 for Win white box target ammo , Hornady white tail ammo $32 . only disadvantage is harder to locally find ammo at stores . nov deer pics.jpg

WhelanLad is quite a bit further south than Ontario.

And WTF does his question have to do with a sniper shooting terrorist in Kunduz talk? Are you drunk?

Poachers favorite, 22-250.
Coyotes at 500 yards, deer at 200.

Super Drunk. I'm likely to topple from my stool soooooooonnnnn.....

In the meantime, get a rifle that shoots, go hunting, and shoot it. Off you go.

If your not poaching any other answer than 243 is overthinking it.

You can't get a faster flatter almost zero felt recoil , (especially with a nice Limbsaver pad), cheap, easily available cartridge.

Only downside is shorter barrel life due to velocity, but will still be a solid performer and last a regular hunter a lifetime.

I've had my model 7 in this caliber for closing in on 35 years and also have the same calibre in a 16" M77.
Great kids and ladies guns.

so shoot the 270? Whats flatter and lighter then that?

I use a RAmerican Predator in 308
Recoil is also less when standing and wearing hunting clothes then when you use a bad bench at the range.

The new 22/250 cans handle the 65 gr bullets and yes they take deer no problem.. I have shot 3 Manitoba Interlake bucks with the Remington cor loc 55gr and the deer piled up within 20-30 yds they were long shots closest was 100 plus yds and the longest was almost 400 yds bullet hits and does not exit looks like a blender inside

Some of you haven’t read his first post. Australia has restrictions on what caliber they can use.
So 270 or larger with a minimum 130 gr bullet. Multiple smaller calibers are available. The 7.62x39 fits perfectly, which you already have. I have a CZ 527 carbine and hasn’t failed me yet. Two new calibers to me which I haven’t tried on animals are 300 Whisper and 6.8SPC. Those are on my Contender carbine. Low recoil and they are chambered in smaller rifles other than contenders.
I would find a rifle that fits her first then pick the caliber. From another of your posts you already have a rifle that she is having problems with not fitting her. Worry about the calibers later.
