SCSA Taipan Rifle - .223 Wylde

Alright, that mag fitment issue is a legitimate issue in my books, so i got to work trying to rectify it, After sanding the cerakote out of the inside of the magwell with some 220, the mags were still tight as heck, i walked away from the project for a while before i take it too far.
When i got back i took a harder look at it, cause before gen 2 mags fit better then gen 3, now it was vice versa, the gen 3 mags fit WAY better, after looking at things just as the gen 2 mags really start binding its the mag stop, the mag stop uses the spine of the mag, and on the gen 2 there's a sloped piece of plastic that isn't present on the gen 3, file that down and they insert, now you still gotta push them in, and they still dont drop free, but they're functional.
In theory steel mags should be the best for the application, and why the incluced pmag rattles around in the mag well and all other pmags dont, is beyond me (MFT mags are snug too) anyway hope my findings help someone else, i recomend filing that left ramped piece on your gen 2 mags before going at your mag well like i did.

Flash hider came in, installed and looks much better, i was not a fan of the look of the handguard going almost all the way to the muzzle.
Cant wait to get this out to shoot some more.
Also another vendor has posted their own sticker draw for one, test your luck!

Because these are an evolving platform, I imagine tinkering with the design will go on for years. Southern Cross Small Arms just announced a few days ago that they now have the Taipan EVO, which is the new upgrade from the X, the bolt release is now located like a standard AR, comes standard with a flared magwell, they have replaced the aluminum buttstock with a composite one to reduce weight. But I personally really like the solid buttstock but each to their own.

That evo's proper bolt catch would be nice, rather then holding on the follower of the mag, and that odd rear mounted manual catch.
Not a fan of that stock, it also looks like it has a composite lower aswell, not a fan of that either.

These things really need to take AR triggers etc.

In time they will evolve or there will be new purpose built offerings that come to the market.

Or not, if we can kick the current government into touch and get a more sensible group that scraps the bans.

After the last election (still in disbelief as to how badly fooled Canadians were) I wont hold my breath however. Elbows up!

mine seem to be holding up well. I had to retighten a couple of screws on one of them but other than that no problems except when inexperienced shooters short stroke them. Same as pump shotguns. After about 1000 rounds each they are nicely broken in and very smooth but the triggers haven't got any better.

I'd love to grab one but while playing with one at the shop, I couldent get over the horrible trigger. Felt like 7lbs and full of grit. While aftermarket triggers are available, the $600 price tag is insane. I think if they made them compatible with ar triggers and offered either a 1913 rail for the stock or buffer tube these would sell like hotcakes.

This post is only in regards to the drop free issue of mags in the Taipan X, and concerning the MFT
LAR 15 pistol mags, which all feed fine for me. I took the measurement front to back of the 5 rd mag that came with my rifle, ( which dropped free).
It was 2.525'' My MFT mags measured 2.545''
I took a file to the rib at the rear of each of my mags, and filled off approx. 0.020'' and now they all drop free.
It worked for me.

I just bought one this afternoon.

I actually quite like the look and feel of this thing. Almost feel like I have to take a shower as I never thought I'd buy what others term a cope gun, but here we are. I did have an MRA Renegade for a few years but never liked the straight pull, probably because I had a much bigger selection of semi autos from which to pick, but now that they are all in the perpetual and probably permanent time out box, looking for something else to tickle the 5.56 itch.

Kind of annoyed it did not come with a manual but wants users to scan a QR code. I know many companies do this, but for a firearm, it's a bit annoying since I may have to keep the box handy, unless there is a way to bookmark it, but still. I spend enough time at work looking at a screen, would be nice to have a printed manual for reference.

I see comments about the magazines so I thought I'd look at this first...

The one glaring thing I can say for sure is that even though the box included a PMAG, 30/5, it was a GEN2, and I can confirm that it does not seat properly (actually, not at all), which would have been a bummer if it weren't for the fact that I have a gazillion PMAG GEN3s, which seat slightly better though it requires some force to get it to seat.

While I was at it I thought I'd break out various mags, and here's my results.

PMAG Gen 2 (included with the rifle package) - DOES NOT SEAT AT ALL, EVEN WITH FORCE
PMAG Gen 2 (windowed, other ones I have, used and new) - DOES NOT SEAT AT ALL, EVEN WITH FORCE
PMAG Gen 3 (windowed/non-windowed) - SEATS WITH FORCE, and that doesn't mean a good sudden whack - it means a lot of strong upwards pushing. It does not drop free though
Duramag - 30 crimped to 5 - SEATS WITH LIGHT PRESSURE, DOES NOT DROP FREE
Duramag LAR15 Metal mags - SEATS WITH NO DIFFICULTY, fits perfectly, DROPS FREE
MFT LAR15 poly mags - SEATS FINE, DROPS FREE

Strange that some people got a Gen3 mag with theirs and some like me got a Gen2 mag. Wonder if North Sylva did a switcheroo when it was imported (I know owners of the now X95 had some issues with the kind of mag that came with theirs years ago).

I will bring it out to my club on the weekend and then add more comments on the performance. I am mating an EOTech XPS3 on this for my range trip. I can't wait to shoot my 5.56 ammo again...

Fred, thank you SO MUCH for this suggestion.

I filed that curved spine area until it was completely flush flat and lo and behold, it seats and I hear the satisfying click sound now. It doesn't drop free, but neither does the Gen3, but it works great....thanks for the tip!
