Hi all - cleaned out grandad's safe years ago on his passing. Ended up with an assortment of 12 and 16 gauge ammunition. Most are older paper shells, Dominion, etc. Cleaned out my own safe and these haven't moved since the day I put them in there. Is there any market for this stuff or should I have it destroyed?

Thanks.

Never destroy ammo. Put it on here cheap or take it to a gun show. Do you have a local pawn shop that deals in firearms? Our pawn shop puts the old stuff they get in a bin and sells it for $4 a handful. Great practice ammo. Nothing wrong with paper shells if they've been properly stored.

None of our local PSs deal with firearms anymore. Been in my safe for years - some of it was just "under the stairs" when we cleaned the house out.

I use it up when I get it nothjng wrong with shooting up old ammo. generally speaking unless it’s something super rare it’s hardly worth anything. Shoot it hunt with it ect special long range could be a fairly heavy load 1 1/4oz or 1 1/2oz generally. I haven’t had much problems from old Canadian made dominion/CIL stuff usually goes bang even when it looks like it shouldn’t. If you don’t want it and just want to get rid of it I’m sure someone would gladly take it off your hands.

The smell of a fired old CIL paper shotgun shell was my one and only drug of choice. Close my eyes and dream of hunting with my grandfather again. Just looking at the pics you posted brings memories back of days spent afield, the smell of the forest and fields and pipe tobacco on the wind.

The old Dominion paper shells are great as long as stored properly. I've had all guages of it. I found recoil and report noticeably sharper and louder than some present day highbrass loads. Have killed partridge crowding 50 yards with Dominion Long Range in my old Iver Johnson Champion. Someone will want it. Not much monetary value as loose shells but still works well imo.

All depends on the load. High brass in a paper hull kinda actually means something unlike modern plastic hulls.
Paper hills especially when loaded with black powder will burn through just above the case head brass being above the powder on the hull helps mitigate that.
With modern plastic hulls it really makes no difference you could have a solid plastic hull and it work just fine theirs actually quite a few companies that have done so. The original AA was at one time a solids plastic hull then you have active and a few others their was also a company here for a brief time in the 1960’s that made translucent hulls and one down in the states that did the same. I have some empties that are not active that are solid plastic.
One of my favourite things for some reason is to collect odd ball hulls I keep joking at some point I’m going to write a book on hull identification.

I agree wholeheartedly with your antiqueguy!
I have been shooting some vintage ammo for some time now , some from my father's estate, and some I picked up along the way.
I flipped when I first found some 20 gauge papers, figuring we would have some fun wit pheasants and ruffies, and I could reload the hulls - WRONG!
Most of them got in holes just like trying to hand load my paper Federal and Gamebore hulls black powder.
However, the older factory stuff still hit like a ton of bricks and is still fun t shoot- we have some that is loaded with maximum drams equiv. of powder and 1 5/8 oz of shot in 12 gauge, and some big 20 gauge loads of 1 1/8 oz of 4's for example and heavier for example.
They sure hit hard on both ends ! LOL

Destroyed ammo? That would be beyond foolish. Shoot them or give them away.
I would be thrilled to have them, and as many have mentioned smell wonderful when fired.

Also a few like myself constantly pick up old CIL shotshells. Even empty fired ones, as I have a large supply of 4B primers that I can reload the CIL battery cup with to make free, new shotshell primers.

Where are you located Turk 1?
