Building a classic Marlin 336, with squared lever, straight deluxe stock and forend. Barrel and cartridge options currently are 35 Rem in a 20" barrel, or 30-30 in 16.5". Mag tube can be full legth, or button.
Which is preferred and why?
Any other options to look at? 32 Win, 38-55?
Octogon or Round?

Thanks!
R.

All great chambering options, I would go 38-55 cause I have everything for it. I like the look of the full tube mag, especially on shorter barrelled rifle(carbine).
Are you making the stock? If so I really like the old style forehand of marlins, I find the newer style really bulky not as good looking and don’t feels(😉) as good in my hands! So if I was gonna make a build I would for sure have a slander forehand. Nice wood and some checkering. Man I want an other lever action!

A 50,000psi 38-55 is a very nice round. 255 right around 2000 is a good thing. The 35 Rem can do about the about the same with a 250 grainer. The rifle has a deluxe stock set already. Which means the newer style fore end. And yes, they are a bit chunky. The old older models do have the slimmer fore ends, but they can be hard to come by checkered. There is one here that could be slimmed down tho... but no checkering then. If you want another lever... this one could be yours! ;)

Actually I’m looking for a 38-55 with a great bore and a tight action (the most important thing for me the rest ok can deal with like fought wood or blueing lost etc)
Let me know if it fits the bill.

It can for sure fit the bill... right to your specs. Colour case hardening, blueing, round or octogon, length, etc.
Can definitely spend all your money!!!! ;) :)
The action is slick and tight, and trigger light and crisp.

If it was me- an octagon 20/22” barrel with a 2/3 mag tube chambered in .360 Buckhammer, CCH receiver by Rex the gun Dr with 3X walnut. Maybe….

That build should be a beauty when done fer sure. Fer me though, I'm hoping Rossi starts making a 16" trapper R95 version in 360 BHMR to
go along with their 20" model. (y)

So no barrel, no tube no hardware… hmmm I would have to find parts hmmmm
Send me a pm with details(price etc)

The 35 Rem with a 20" half octagon, half round would be reminiscent of older models offered by Marlin back in the day...
The 38-55 is also old school cool...or the 375 Win for a little beefier brass...just harder to find components to load for...
If looking for something a little more modern, yet unique, you could go with the 338 Marlin Express...and giving more thump for bears and moose!

Leave it as a 35 REM - I like that 16.5 “ idea with a short mag tube 👍
