This is a really cool build!
I like that you have duplicate flush mount sling swivels. Also interesting with the side stock position.
What did you use for dowels? And did you just drill the stock for the dowels or epoxy sleeves in?
Does the magnet hold well enough? Is that epoxied in place as well?
Great ingenuity there!
Thanks, it was an interesting build for sure.
I used stainless bolts as the material for the pins.
The stock is drilled for the pins but they are not used to locate the butt stock, when I made step one was to drill a tight fitting hole for the pins through both plates absolutely square and then welded nuts on the backside of one plate with a relief on the butt side to accommodate the welded nuts and lock nut.
I shaped it to the stock last.
To fit the magnet I had to hole saw a large hole for the magnet cup washer and then mig welded it to the plate, a fair amount of grinding removed any evidence of this and it looks one piece, and another relief was cut so the plate installed flush.
The magnet is a rare earth version and as per Lee Valley they have greater pull when used with the surrounding metal washer which is why I went to the extra trouble of adding it.
If the magnet has an issue, arguably it’s that it might be too hard to release…it ain’t moving one iota unless you really give it a hard pull. Without the magnet installed it was zero friction slip fit, with the magnet its on there solid. The dual pins keep it from twisting and keep it aligned.
I can’t recall who made the flush cups, the ones in the rear stocks were straight forward, drill a hole (Forshner bits) a dab of epoxy and a screw. The fore stock was a lot more difficult and is the best I could come up with at the time…not much wood and no room for much but where I sunk it is the thickest part and I found a QD pocket with a large flange that while it detracted from the look allowed more surface area for epoxy and as I couldn’t retain it mechanically with a screw I figured maximizing surface area was in my best interest. So far it’s worked great with no issues.
Cheers,
