Modern Lever Build - Sanity Check

I had the same idea and put this .357 together a few months back.

I like everything about that Winchester 92 except for the crescent butt. I have a different Miroku '92 with a shotgun butt and it is absolutely sublime. My 130 year old 1886 isn't any smoother.

I looked at the R95 and thought it's pretty expensive for a Rossi. I'd like to handle one, sure, but unless it's something the heart desires I'm more comfortable with Henry/Marlin/Winchester

Ive had my eye on the Aero Precision lever gun in FDE since they started teasing us a couple years ago......dont want to wait any longer for something that may never reach the market. So this brings me here to the Rossi 95, i like the short threaded barrel even though its a pricey item for what you get. The aftermarket goodies look good but i dont see any direct bolt-on options for a complete top rail?? other than modifying (shortening) a midwest industries 13.625" M-Lok sight system..... any ideas out there?

If you go to a mares leg and still want a full stock a magnetic extension only requires two drilled holes in the original stock and it works well.

This is a really cool build!

I like that you have duplicate flush mount sling swivels. Also interesting with the side stock position.

What did you use for dowels? And did you just drill the stock for the dowels or epoxy sleeves in?

Does the magnet hold well enough? Is that epoxied in place as well?

Great ingenuity there!

Here's my "build":

Henry mare's leg.jpg

Standard Henry Mare's Leg .44mag...swapped out rear stock with full length one off the EE...swapped sights to a slightly higher front bead and a very small but adjustable peep that slid right into the existing dovetail (I think it came originally off an old Mini-14). Build completed! One of my favourite plinkers.

I carried this and its predecessor, a Rossi Ranch Hand, on a number of deer hunts but never had a shot. Take a scoped bolt gun shooting a pointy centerfire cartridge...and nice bucks come traipsing out at 75 yards. But the one day you carry something like the Henry...every deer is out at 300 yards! :(

But this gun has killed a lot of pop cans, icicles, clay pigeon fragments, ground squirrels, skunks and other backyard targets of opportunity. It's gonna score a deer one of these days...:)

Thanks, it was an interesting build for sure.
I used stainless bolts as the material for the pins.
The stock is drilled for the pins but they are not used to locate the butt stock, when I made step one was to drill a tight fitting hole for the pins through both plates absolutely square and then welded nuts on the backside of one plate with a relief on the butt side to accommodate the welded nuts and lock nut.
I shaped it to the stock last.
To fit the magnet I had to hole saw a large hole for the magnet cup washer and then mig welded it to the plate, a fair amount of grinding removed any evidence of this and it looks one piece, and another relief was cut so the plate installed flush.
The magnet is a rare earth version and as per Lee Valley they have greater pull when used with the surrounding metal washer which is why I went to the extra trouble of adding it.
If the magnet has an issue, arguably it’s that it might be too hard to release…it ain’t moving one iota unless you really give it a hard pull. Without the magnet installed it was zero friction slip fit, with the magnet its on there solid. The dual pins keep it from twisting and keep it aligned.
I can’t recall who made the flush cups, the ones in the rear stocks were straight forward, drill a hole (Forshner bits) a dab of epoxy and a screw. The fore stock was a lot more difficult and is the best I could come up with at the time…not much wood and no room for much but where I sunk it is the thickest part and I found a QD pocket with a large flange that while it detracted from the look allowed more surface area for epoxy and as I couldn’t retain it mechanically with a screw I figured maximizing surface area was in my best interest. So far it’s worked great with no issues.
Cheers,

How decent are the Citadel Levtacs? i’m aware of their handguard issues, but nothing a drop of blue loctite wouldn’t remedy I suppose.

I’ve got a few hundred rounds of 44Spl I had loaded up for a Ruger Super Black Hawk that need to be either used or sold off..

I have a Rossi R92 in 357/38, which is the same rifle and it has been excellent. I have upgraded mine to be essentially the same as the Citadel, except for the stock. The rifle works well and has continued to work even though it has only been cleaned approximately every 500 rounds or so.
