King of 4000fps

I bought a Ruger M77 light sporter in 22-250 to use mainly for running deer target shooting and for fun shoots back in late 70's.
Fookin' accurate little rifle with my load using 40 gr Speers at a tad over 4000fps with 38.0 gr of 4895. Mucho grande for melon
& water filled pumpkin exploding as well. The rifle still shot tight after 500 rds but the bore ahead of the chamber was cooked 3 inches.
"Redneck free bore."

I’ve got a an XR100 in 22 Middlested and a 700 in 22/243 no neck turn no fireforming. With the XR100 I rechambered the factory barrel for fire forming at the same time as the Lilja 1-8 was fitted, trouble sas it shot so well with 52 grain Bergers that I left it on for quite a while. It’s hard to unscrew a barrel that puts 5 in the same hole.

My all time favorite coyote rifle is a 22-250ai pushing a 50gr ballistic tip right at 4000 fps. Now sold to a buddy but I used to have a 257wby with a custom 30” barrel that would do 4200fps with an 80gr barnes. Flatten just about anything with that combo.
Glad to see this post. Im toying with the idea of a new build. My thoughts are a 32" JC barrel, 1:7 twist, 257 weatherby mag, running 75gr hammer hunter bullets.

Seeing you are getting 4200 fps with 80gr's out of a 30", really makes me want to even more. I'm probably just going to pull the trigger on this build.

.22-250 has stuck around a long time for a reason. Lately, because of the trend for heavier and heavier bullets for small bore rifles, the .22-250 has lost some of it's apeal. The fact remains, with light bullets and it's slow twist, it can be devistatingly fast. I had one 45 years ago, and on ground hogs and coon a 45 gr hollow points at just simply caused them to cease to exist. Hodgedon shows potential speeds just short 4,500 fps with Hodgedon powders and 35 gr bullets.

The varmint won't know the difference between this and the AI, and these you can get off the shelf along with ammo.

I tended to load mine down a bit to baby the barrel. It still blew varmints up at ranges out past 400 yards on a calm day.

I missed this thread first time around.

Buddy of mine has a 32-378 (Ron Smith barrel on a P14 action) that we loaded up a box of 125 gr bullets and crono'd them at 4200...no reason to stick with the smaller stuff, get one that'll do some work!!

A few years back when I had my 257 WM I loaded some 75gr Vmax over a full charge of H414 right on 3900 FPS, used them on coyotes, given the fur was worthless so no loss OMG did they open up a dog, gave the magpies small shreds that didn't need ripping, would have loved to try them on wood chucks but we don't have any out in my neck of the woods.

Other than in your head....why does it matter if the bullet flies at 4000fps or 3100fps. Sitting behind the gun you have no idea. It's just a number. So it takes .3 of a second longer to get there. You can tell?

In my personal experience, when it comes to the effect on coyotes and such, you can absolutely tell. Typical the faster you get the longer your point blank range is. You might loose out to other options when the ranges get further, but not having to worry about holdovers out to 300 or so makes things pretty simple when calling predators.

Friend of mine is what I'd deem a professional coyote killer. 3 - 400 per year for the past 25yrs and he's done it with every varmint cartridge known to man pretty much. Discussing those various offerings this winter over a couple of pops and getting his and his partners preferences. His current attention is focused on the .22 Creedmoor and his yote buddies are all over the map with .220, and 22-250 mostly. Lots of competition between the group. His words, "the Creed is a thing of beauty but when I switch over during the day its almost always to my .204s." "The guys with the Swifties are always telling me, those .204s stretch those dogs out with serious affirmation." "It doesnt give up anything to the .22s chucking bigger bullets."

I only have 17H, .204, .222, and .223 myself but both .204s are an absolute scream to shoot, pardon the pun, and my personal faves. I guess the only real drawback is not being able to take them out for deer, antelope, etc but I never had plans to do that anyways.

The hydraulic shock in a pregnant female ground hog would be... satisfying.

LOL

you are right , very little "practical benefit" but man...it sure is satisfying to watch my buddy kill a cow moose at 200 yrds with that 32-378...When it was hit, that moose did almost a 360 in mid air and never even wiggled after.

The first time my buddy saw me shoot a furpuppie with the 270 Weatherby , he said as his jaw dropped, “I got to get me bigger gun “ . It was just pure technicolor . Until you have shot varmints with a really hot , powerful gun , you just don’t understand . It is like eating potato chips, can’t do just one. The 100 gr .270 Speer flying trash cans are truly unbelievable on critters.

Hah! That reminds me of when my uncle came moose hunting with us. He brought a 375H&H with him. He hit a bull at about 100 yds and the moose let out a huge bellow and fell on the spot. It was like he was knocked over with a battering ram.
