My point is pretty simple. A points system rewards people who have been applying the longest while still giving everyone a chance. Once you draw your tag, your points reset, so over time everyone ends up drawing at about the same rate.
I'm genuinely curious what the argument against that is. If everyone has the same long-term opportunity, why oppose a points system? Is there a downside I'm missing, or is the preference just for a pure lottery?
And since we're posting definitions, I'm still not seeing how "DEI" relates to hunting tags. Maybe you could post the definition and explain how that term is related to this discussion, because I'm not seeing the connection. I'm not as well-versed in political slang as you seem to be, so maybe I'm missing something.

Points systems take into consideration the unique circumstances of individuals (how long they've been applying/how many points they have) and adjust treatment accordingly. It's basically a textbook case of DEI in action.
Also I already explained why I'm against points systems, it rewards long time hunters by punishing new hunters. Discouraging new hunters will only make hunting in BC harder/less available over time. Hunting is also a gateway to gun ownership. Given the current political climate I think we should be doing everything in our power to encourage young people into our fold.
The IDEA of a points system isn't terrible, the problem is that everyone who gets on board after the first year or couple of years is screwed. There's 100k hunting licences bought in BC each year. If we assume only 10% of those put in for LEH, that's 10k people with max points. How long is it going to take for someone who gets in 5 years after the start of the points system to catch up to those people (and everyone who got in after year 1, year 2, etc)? A long ass time.
For context, this year there is about 600 moose tags allocated for all of Region 3 and 1400 for region 5. Oh, and 167k applications were received for the 2025 LEH. That'll be for all species, but there is only 9 or 10 species you can apply for, so 10k is likely a massive under estimate for the number of moose LEH applications in a given year.
I think they could fix a lot of the issues with LEH by tinkering with the reduced odds you get after drawing. For Moose I think its 3 years of reduced odds, and only 1 year for some other stuff? That would reduce the chances of someone pulling good tags repeatedly, without punishing new hunters.

As I said I draw a moose tag every year, why? Because there are lots of draws where there are less applicants than tags…
Let’s say the quiet part out loud.. folks that are upset they aren’t getting drawn are only applying for easy access. Easy hunts and aren’t willing to do the work it takes for less desirable draws.
Easiest solution would be allow successful applicants only one successful draw per year. You can apply for many.. and if you draw multiple then you pick the one you want the rest get redrawn in a second round that only folks that haven’t already drawn a successful tag.
I think we can ALL agree(albeit reluctantly) that folks don’t need more than a single LEH per year above and beyond the ample GOS.
I know someone that applies for sheep goat caribou bison moose elk every year and usually gets none sometimes gets one.
This year his group got bison, he also pulled a solo moose tag and a caribou draw. It is impossible with the overlap for him to hunt them all. One maybe two will be wasted and people that applied and would have went now miss out… should we expect him to only apply for one draw a year ? Nah. But there should be a way to relinquish tags into a pool of folks that haven’t drawn.
I bet there’s lots of people that would have loved any one of those three draws
That would greatly increase hunter participation. Not take opportunity away from hunters and lets them decide personally which animal / tag means the most to them that year.

This is true. Look at some of these region 5 odds. 8 hunts have better than 2:1 odds from this random selection:
It likely helps that all 6 of us apply as individuals so if one or two of us pull tags the other 4 aren’t on reduced odds and are more likely to pull so we can go again. That being said even being on reduced odds we still do pretty well. 4/5 of the last years at least one person in the group has got a bull.
745 sept 1-15 for me as that was my first choice. My buddy pulled 744 sept 1-15 as a second choice draw.
I think that them adding the rut hunts and everyone tripping over themselves to apply for that really helped the other draws this year.
We were both on reduced odds and still pulled a tag. I bet you that a lot of people that usually apply for the Sept 1-15 draws applied for the Oct 1-15 instead.
Last year I didn’t have a moose tag personally so I elk hunted, I had to have seen 100 bulls in 3 weeks. It helps that a lot of 745 can’t be accessed by road hunters and the keepers of the land though.

Yeah I was thinking swap to individual draws instead but in the group/shared regs it says only reduced odds for 1 season if anyone has been drawn before and puts in with a group/shared instead of the 3 years? If memory is correct.
We do 7-23 since we have contact with guide owners in the area after hunting up there so many years.
1 is inactive and the other is operating again for the last couple seasons.
I think with the pipeline moving there and employees that hunt or tell family it seems a little more busy, even still last years odds where 5.2:1 or close to that.
With most of our group having 4 years no draws and the rest going on 3 years no draws with the last years odds you would think 1 group would be drawn unless I’m missing something?
Understand it’s still a lottery but a fairly good chance lottery.
Also a bit of a hard area to hunt as most of the good ponds and lakes are off the road a ways with it being over grown in most spots other than pipeline.
Anyways, keep trying just like our local Vancouver Island Rosevelt draws hahaha
it's funny to me..... I stopped caring about LEH a few years ago. Then I teamed up with a new hunter who is all fired up for LEH every season and asked me a couple years ago to show them the ropes. She didn't get drawn last year but the other group did so we joined them for a bit. She let me decide the group hunt location this year and asked me to put in for elk as well.
Wouldn't ya know it , we got the group moose hunt (3 of us) and I also pulled the elk draw LOL
Same region in the Peace for both hunts, just different dates. Going in by horse so it's going to be a real adventure this year.
This new hunter is sure bringing me good luck since i agreed to mentor her at the request of her husband. He's also my boss so I don't even have to ask for time off to go hunting LOL It's a given!!

Nope, there were two of us with two moose tags. Then my buddy and his kid with elk tags. 4 total.
I believe I ran into that group though and if it’s the one I’m thinking they went home empty handed I believe. Did you have much luck? It was certainly a tough hunt with all the heat!
I picked the november hunt for moose and the dec to feb hunt for elk hehe Gonna be winter by the time the moose hunt comes. Have done well in the november hunts though so is why i put in. Gonna be an experience for the gal I'm mentoring LOL
My moose draw isn’t until November.
We were poking around looking for elk, but didn’t find anything in that area. Had to jump over 40km to get into bulls.
40km east perhaps? I did / had to do the exact same thing once my moose hit the ground. There was an abysmal amount of elk sign around this year but I hit the zone border road went just over 40km east then hit a road that cut north and voila elk sign everywhere.. funny enough the elk seemed to prefer the active gas areas with lots of people rather than the old deactivated lines. Likely cuts down on the real predators wolves and cougars.
