Start with a plan that enforces security in depth. Deter. Detect. Delay. Defend.
Make the house as unattractive to criminals as possible. Eliminate hiding spots around entries. Illuminate with auto sensors. Put up security signs. And a real mean dog.
This plays into detecting people. The lights are a great way to signal a light sleeper. As is a security system. Even a wifi system with alerts. Put one camera in front and one in back. If they pick up movement, the app will alert you.
But what if they still don't get the picture? You want to delay them as much as possible. Most criminals will actually come through the front or back door. Make it hard. Reinforce your strike plates, put security film on your door side glass. Unless your daughter is housing the Mona Lisa, criminals want low effort. Make it a workout.
Then there's defending...which is tricky here. So if I were writing a screenplay, I'd have a plan. A hard point to run to and defend. Door would get closed and locked. Again. Reinforce the door and have something to put in front. Call the cops. Now unless there are firearms on the other side, they'll be coming through that door limb by limb. Limbs don't like long sharp cutting tools or blunt objects. Things that are reasonable for a homeowner to have. When limbs stop working so do people.
