Not true the neck is sizing almost the full length of the neck before any tapered part of the case starts sizingYou can not "neck size" using a full length sizing die. PERIOD.
As the case engages the FL die the neck diameter and the shoulder diameter and the body are all being sized at the same time ... and as that is happening the shoulder commonly bulges forward a little... causing firm closing of the bolt. A neck sizing die does not size the body of the case at all.
And the #12 above post is excellent advice.
Not true. Size 1/2 the neck and the body has engaged the die too. Try it with a dry case and a clean and dry die with only the neck lubed. Not true the neck is sizing almost the full length of the neck before any tapered part of the case starts sizing
Just tried it on 30 06 which i believed i had neck sized before. Yes has started sizing well before the neck is sizedNot true. Size 1/2 the neck and the body has engaged the die too. Try it with a dry case and a clean and dry die with only the neck lubed.
guntech, it really depends on the cartridge. But it doesn't hurt anything if a bit of the body gets resized, might even help a bit, depending on the case. Not true. Size 1/2 the neck and the body has engaged the die too. Try it with a dry case and a clean and dry die with only the neck lubed.
My point was simply to point out you do not neck size with a full length sizing die. You partially size the neck and the body. It is not neck sizing unless you are using a neck sizing die.guntech, it really depends on the cartridge. That little bit on the shoulder isn't much and just makes things work better all around. The lower portion of the neck, helps keep the case centered in the chamber and keeps the bullet concentric to the bore, which should enhance accuracy.Just tried it on 30 06 which i believed i had neck sized before. Like the one shown in the pic taken by porpoise, and I fully agree with you on that.My point was simply to point out you do not neck size with a full length sizing die. You partially size the neck and the body. It is not neck sizing unless you are using a neck sizing die.
The only problem I have encountered when partially sizing a case with a full length die is sometimes the case is hard to chamber because the shoulder itself needs to be touched by the die flattening that small bulge that sometimes forms.
Thats if true for a straight walled case. Not for tapered case like 300wm, 30-06, 308, etc.Size 1/2 the neck and the body has engaged the die too. Try it with a dry case and a clean and dry die with only the neck lubed.

I already do in 300wm and others. I expect results would depend on chamber dimensions and vary from rifle to rifle.Try it...
