308s worth buying?

I am not recoil sensitive but cannot remember shooting a 3006 that didn’t buck like a mule. That being said most say why a 308 when there is the 3006. Well from what I can figure out unless you are shooting 400+ the difference between an 8 and a 6 is negligible so see my first point.

Did stinky coyote get banned or something? He's got a couple 308wins and kills with them and he hasn't posted in here yet....

I have a vanguard that shoots greats in 308win but it's heavy. I'm thinking of getting a tikka in 308 because I have a lot of 308 ammo but I want something lighter to carry.
That's hilarious, when he was on his 6.5 Grendel kick there wasn't another cartridge- including the 308 Winchester that was worth anything , they were all inferior to the mighty Grendel! LOL

Same can be said about pretty much all chambering comparison, 30-06 vs 300 win mag, 35 whelan vs 9.3x62 vs 375h&h…. That is why you pick something that works for you and go hunting(as long as it is legal in your jurisdiction like up here for bison there is a minimum 30-06 180gn 2800ftlbs@muzzel. And 6mm for all big game except for bison)

Ditto. It is said the sweet velocity spot for hunting is centred over the 2400 FPS mark. Better perhaps to go heavier and slower than this than to go faster and lighter. 2400 FPS is plenty fast, remember in the 19th Century millions of bison were slaughtered with big bullets travelling in the low to mid teens velocities. Velocity above this sweet spot is not something you need an excess of at fair-chase, ethical ranges under most scenarios, it is primarily useful only for flattening the trajectory for long ranges. It comes with prices - increased recoil, increased odds of bullet fragmentation, decreased penetration, increased meat damage, increased odds of wounding. Many hunters do not understand this stuff, that better is not about faster. Proper penetration for the most efficient kills comes from a combination of suitable velocity and bullet construction combined with sectional density. To get good sectional density you need a heavy-for-calibre bullet.

Another advantage of the .308 as an aside is ammo availability for those who don't handload. During the various ammo availability crunches we've endured in recent decades, one calibre stood out for remaining on the shelves in fair abundance: the .308.

77gr TMK and 88gr ELDM have entered the chat lol

I don't mean this to be confrontational or abrasive, only as food for thought. There are many ways. Any can be YOUR way...but better? 2400 FPS is a useless rule of thumb, as useless as saying "it takes 1500 ft/lbs to kill animal X" what's it doing better than a mono at 3000 fps? Pretty much nothing.

Tons of buffalo were slaughtered with pointy sticks like at the Folsom site :) By the appeal to history logic, pretty sure Atl-atl can make a case. Likewise, we really don't know that the buffalo "hunters" who carried out the slaughter couldn't have been just as effective with much smaller caliber modern rifles and modern bullets do we?

By the standards of the day, they were using what worked, but the standards of that day are left behind for a reason (unless anyone just plain likes using them, which is awesome, and more power to them! But they damn sure ain't better lol)

Between 3006 and 308, I enjoy shooting 308 much more than I shoot 3006. I had a 3006 for deer and bear hunting, but ended up keeping the 3006 in the safe for years, before I sold it. I simply kept my freezer full with the 308. Is the 3006 better, I don't know but I just never benefited from the 3006.

I would hunt with either but my go to rifle is a 30-06.

Coincidently I have both 308 and 30-06 in Sako 85s. I assume Sako/Tikka doesn't retool for these offerings especially since both are 1-11 twist.

When I got the 30-06 years ago I had a hard time getting it to shoot well. It shot a lot of stuff okay but only Hornady Interlocks/Superformance 165s in their factory ammunition was perfect and what you would expect from a rifle of this dollar value. I ended up changing the stock also so it is free floating and bedded to achieve this.

When I picked up an 85 in 308 I was expecting the same song and dance. I headed to the range with about 10 boxes of popular 308 offerings in 150-165. Some I purchased just for the trip and others I had kicking around the safe from trade deals or estate type purchase.

I had often heard the term inherently accurate in reference to the 308 and I just passed it off as American sport writer propaganda. Well in this case the description fits as this rifle will shoot basically anything you stuff in it right around an inch. It shoots clover leaf groups with Sako 150 Gamehead, and Hammerhead along with Hornady custom. I can't remember what else I had along but there was 2 or 3 offerings from Federal and some Norma as well. I would hunt with any of them.

The only reason I stick with the 06 is the McMillan stock on it. It is lighter than the 308 and much nicer to carry. I also feel that it would be better suited for something that may try to eat me, be it real or imagined.

The ol' "Generations of experienced hunters know nothing and then I came along to set the record straight" proclamation.

It certainly simplifies things. No one knows anything, they just think they do.

Sorted.

Oh no! Not at all! not setting anyone or anything straight!

If anyone wants to hunt with atl-atls cause people have done it for so long and it clearly works, I'll be the last one to criticize.

But we must avoid the logical fallacy of thinking theres some rule in it in the first place, where none exists. Or that if we conjure one up, it even has compelling reasons to be adhered to besides "I like it".

If sticks with rocks at the end work at all kinds of speeds perhaps adhering to a certain one out of an appeal to "simplifying it" is unnecessary as well as inaccurate is all lol

read this whole thread.
I enjoyed hunting in bc with a .308 semi while I could. Never felt undergunned in any situation i found myself in. **note... never hunted a bison LOL
These days though, I think the best thing about a .308 rifle is that the barrel can be pulled off and replaced with a .338Federal pipe instead. Other than rimfires shotguns and crossbow, my 3 go to rifles for BC are 7mm rem mag, .303 brit and .338fed
A close friend I hunt with has .308 and a 30-06. He uses the .308 for coyotes, deer, black bears and the 30-06 for sheep, elk, moose. He's a reloader and likes the simplicity of bullet compatablity between the two chamberings. You can also pretty much always find factory loads on the shelf of these two calibers in any shop in the country

I’ve been thinking for a while now about a 338 federal, just have to find the right 308 donor…

Same. Yesterday I was daydreaming about having a pre 64 Win 70 Fwt rebored haha. One of the Classic Stainless actions would be great too.

I wonder if it really does anything the 308 aint doing but would like to find out all the same. Can't have too many guns lol. I like the idea of the 160gr TTSX.

Well there is always something else that do more or less the same thing has what you already have 🙄🤣. I don’t have a 338 anything and I don’t have a short action rifle yet… I was thinking it would be a good one to have.

Well having owned both and killed game with both there is no difference ! 308 Win 150 TTSX or 338 Fed 160 TTSX
Can go up too 200 with the 308W and 225 s with the 338 F
Game will never know the difference 🤷‍♂️. But the 338 F is Kooler 😋 but the 308 is MORE PRACTICAL. 100 -200 grers
Better BC better SD bullets . Best to have them BOTH 🤪😃

Ok Nice BUT ! A Truck Quad - Gun needs a shorter barrel Max 20 “ and a Detachable Mag too ! 👍 JMHO 😊

If you want a lightweight rifle to hunt elk, bear, and whatever else around that size within 300 yards then I would say 308 is one of many good choices.

It excels with shorter barrel rifles in weight ranges from 130-170 grains. Burning faster powders than the 30-06 or 6.5 creed.

With the 130 grain ttsx you can duplicate a 130 grain 270 win ballistics in a short action platform!

A short action is lighter and so is its ammo. I think that the 7.62x51 was designed by nato to save weight over the 30-06 but I’m sure there is someone here who knows more about that than I do.

So is it worth buying? Depends on what you are buying for. What work does it need to accomplish for you?
