Who hates a .270 Winchester?

270 is a goat boy caliber
I guess when you said goat you aren't referring to Greatest Of All Time? I could be wrong.

I'm not entirely familiar with the definition of goat boy, but i expect the 6.5 cm would also be interesting to them.

The 6.5 creedmore is popular because of lower recoil and good ballistic performance, the same appeal the 270 had a hundred years ago.

I am not a fan of the 270 for the same reason many people will not eat tomatoes- just don't like it! LOL
I don't need to justify that statement with BS stats and ballistics and recoil charts.
I was a 6.5WSM fan boy for years and would build another in a heart beat, really like a 6.5 cartridge. I currently shoot two different rifles in 280 Remington and love that caliber in several different cartridges
But the 270? Not really, pass.
Do I however think that it is a totally fantastic all around cartridge for many reasons?
Yup.
I have owned several , but sold them all.

In a FB group I am in a bunch of guys, whom I presume are from south of the border, go on and on about a .270 being a substandard cartridge for big game, and a .243 is far superior. These are elk hunters. I am from northern BC, where the .270 has been a standard cartridge since Jack O'Connor made it famous. I am only 67, and I have been reloading since I was 18, so naturally if I did have a .270 I would be loading it with the bullets of my choice. No one in the group said any of the things I might have expected, like perhaps 130 gr bullets waste a lot of meat, or they do not like long action rifles, or the .243 kicks less, or a .243 rifle is a bit lighter.. They just do not like it. Please, give the .270 a like or a dislike, and if you do not like it, let us know why.
Is the name of you're Facebook group intitled "halfwits". Nobody in they're right mind would state that the 270 Winchester is an inferior cartridge, especially to the 243 Winchester.

yup hate is a pretty strong word- dislike would be more appropriate I think, unless you are talking about someone who hates the 6.5Creedmoor! The vast majority of the haters have no idea of what they re talking about!LOL

Yes I own one, and it’s kinda grown on me thru load development and bagging a few critter with it too.

Is it my first love?…… No!
Is it my forever love?…. Not Likely.
Is it capable?……… damn straight it is.

Remember gang;

Beginners talk cartridges.
Novices talk ballistics.
Experts talk wind.

The 270 works just fine. Cartridge selection has yet to cost me a single big game animal in the field. It’s never happened.

The 270 Winchester is a great cartridge in its own right, but of course we always had a 30-06 so 270 never really entered the equation,

I've always found it in no mans land as far as a hunting cartridge for British Columbia, we seem to always go up in cartridge size from hunting deer to Elk, we went straight to the 300 Wby and now the 300 PRC

For deer hunting I almost always use a 280AI and then the 300 PRC for Elk.

Funny thing in the last few months I have bought or traded for three wood stocked rifles, two 270 Winchester rifles, a gorgeous BNIB Winchester Featherweight CRF 270 win from the New Haven plant which I was originally going to rebarrel to the 9.3x62 but my gunsmith talked me out of and a Kimber Classic 84L 270 win which will be my donor for 270-25 RPM.

Now with all this 270 talk my gunsmith talked me into building a 270-25 RPM so we have a reamer on order, I ordered a set of 25 RPM Bushing dies, we can just neck up 25 RPM brass with a mandrel and then use the appropriate bushing in the 25 RPM dies when full length resizing,

I'm thinking I will leave this 270-25 RPM build in the wood stock as it seems fitting for this age old classic caliber.

Love and hate are pretty strong terms for a rifle cartridge guess it's just more sign of the polarized times we live in.

I have a few rifles in 243 and 270 and like them pretty much equally...Both cartridges do great at what they were designed to do and I have pulled off shots with both that would make many on here blush and call BS...Come to think of it I have pulled off shots like that with other rifle cartridges at one time or another as well.

Guess a big part of a cartridge when it comes to love and hate is the gunner. :)

I have 4 270's but was never lucky with them so they stand in the corner. The 270 is ideal for those that don't do ballistics and want to stay under 300yds. For longer ranges I think 280/7x64 is the better cartridge. I had also checked velocity on some factory loads and was very disappointed with 270 speeds. 270 Win has it's place just not for me.

Well said

My answer to your question is, I like the 270 Winchester. I do not dislike any cartridge. Cartridges are designed or redesigned, as the case is with both the .243 and the .270 from the parent cartridges. 308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield respectively. Both were intended for different game and general use based on the available bullets at their conception. Both were also intended to provide high velocity and reduced recoil compared to the parent bullet cartridge combination.
For anyone to hate or dislike any cartridge is just a false statement. It's mindless drivel and has no sensible or possible conclusion other than pure opinion. Not that opinions don't matter.. they do!
I suspect that your friends on Faceboo are south eastern and don't typically hunt larger deer species in general.. but that's an assumption.
Guns are tools to be used for what they are intended for. Take your pick for what you want to accomplish. Cheers
I agree.
