I've gone over these threads quite a bit and I'm not convinced the bear was as dangerous as you think. Nothing in the pictures makes me see anything different than a feeding bear. As far as the shot not scaring him, that is not unusual, as wild game often doesn't know anything about shooting, and just hears a roar of thunder. I have done the same thing without any effect.
If you would have jumped up, roared and made a charge at him, you could then have judged his thoughts on you better. You had a rifle in your hands, you could have done it.
And, if black bears kill more people than any other type bear, it is only because black bears are so wide spread and there are so many of them, as compared to the dangerous grizzlies and polar bears.
The story of the woman killed in Quebec by a bear has gotten a lot of press, but the story continues that this is only the second death by a bear in 25 years in Quebec! A danger so small as to be not worth mentioning.
H4381, you may be right. Since I respect you I will answer you directly.
Some of the idiots on this board seem to know more about what happened then I do. A couple of other guys have suggested the same thing as you and they may also be right.
I know that I caused the situation, it was my own damn fault.
Yes it is possible that if I had done that, the bear may have turned tail but I don't believe that, because of the way it reacted to my yelling at it, gave me the idea that it was not stopping.
The point I tried to make is that in the situation that I was in, 250 yards from my ATV, without back-up, with no other options really, the only thing I could do was shoot in front of it.
TBart said I could have thrown a rock, trust me, there were none there, but yeah that might have worked (if available).
So if I had made the assumption that the bear meant me no harm, the next thing is, it would have been too close for me to do anything else, except kill it. I am certain that I did the correct thing.
The other thing about that bear was the way it reacted after I caught up to it again a few minutes later was very different.
It was a very aggressive bear.
People have opinions and will believe whatever they want.
