Thank you for your email inquiry. I understand your concerns and will address them here.
I believe the Czech ammunition to which you are referring is that manufactured by Sellier & Bellot and imported by a Canadian distributor. In order for a distributor to import any explosive product, including ammunition, it must be authorized for use, sale, manufacture, and importation into Canada. At the ERD, we authorize explosives to ensure that they meet certain criteria set out in the Explosives Act for chemical composition, stability, and other characteristics. By doing so, we help ensure that only explosives that are safe to use and function the way that they are supposed to function are used by Canadians. In turn, this helps uphold our mandate of ensuring the Safety of Canadians, both the general public and those in the explosives industry.
Having said this, the Sellier & Bellot 7.62 x 39mm ammunition is authorized for sale in Canada. The information you have obtained is being corrected. After receiving a complaint of sale of unauthorized ammunition, we investigated and found that a distributor was in fact selling an unauthorized Czech ammunition and have acted accordingly. The 7.62 x 39mm was not affected by our actions.
The goal of the ERD is and always will be to ensure and improve public safety. I trust that I have been able to address your concerns with this email; however, feel free to contact me should you have any more questions or require further assistance.
