My source is IMI themselves - not the freakin' Google - I talk to real people. Early production Galil's were not equipped with recoil buffers - extensive full-auto action would cause the cracks. I'm tiring of this - the FAL and Galil are my favorites - but I wouldn't willingly pack either on a long trek.

I have an L1A1, an M 14 (CA) and a Valmet M 78. You might say I enjoy full size 7.62 X 51 rifles.
The M 78 is the most precisely machined of the 3.
The M14 points the best of the 3.
The L1A1 gives me the biggest feeling of confidence and well being when I pull it out of the safe. I can still remember the feeling of awe and respect for a well designed firearm that I felt when the first C1A1 was handed to me in cadets at the age of 14...I didnt want to hand it back, and even at 14, I knew I wanted one to keep. Later I got to shoot one on a regular basis for three and a half years, although light armour tended to use Sterlings more.
The left hand mag change, left hand change lever, etc. are truly beneficial if you are going to shoot off more than a couple of leisurely rounds.
As far as appreciating a good design, I get the same feeling from a hipower...yeah, it's an old design, but the flawless simplicity of design is timeless.
You all have your opinions and that is exactly why we have GM and Chrysler and Ford and Nissans etc. on the road.

Ahhh, the power, confidence, and awe that the FN inspires (in addition to the factoids, and tales of yore)! I'd like to hear some talk on that front now; this being an FN thread. Any of you guys ever pull the old girl out of the safe, just to rack her back, and hear her talk dirty to ya' with that sublime, crisp, "Klack-SCHACK?" Oh Lordy, what a sound; what a FEEL; solid, excellence, power! You just know you can bet your life on it if you need to! I have to change my pants now. LOL! If you've never experienced an FN-FAL, then you've just missed out on SO much.
P.S. My wife just came by and saw what I just wrote, and said it sounded like a Penthouse Forum to a GUN. I can't argue. LOL!
