If they really believed that they were in any danger, why did they go to the vehicle then return with the sks rifles, instead of just getting in the vehicle, and driving away to safety?
FWIW, I take little from most stories I read on the net. Most posters can't convey the feel of the moment into words and readers tend to read more than what it is. In short I wasn't there so therefore can't judge.
This dude claims that he was firing shots into a known hillside that had an angry, snarlin' bear, standing in front it. What's the big deal? Or is it that you choose not to believe him??
As for trying to rationalize the thought process of loading up the SKS.... Stress affects many in different ways. The added compound of the Fireball would/could have added to making a rational decision, tough.... I wasn't there.
"What were you doing up there?"
At last check, it's not a law-breaker to go camping in the woods. Shooting either, for that matter.
Again; Bubba's coming in and your drunk. You have access to load up a gun. What are ya goin to do? Sign away your rights just because you had a few?? Or perhaps you'd move the guns out of the house for the planned Christmas party that you're hosting, just to be sure that ya can't have access to them because you plan on drinking??? That way you could offer Bubba a glass of cheer when he comes.
IMO, tudes such as this give fuel to the anti's.
Planned shooting events and guns don't mix. I don't condone that IF that is what went on/was planned. As for the attack and the outcome.... I wasn't there and hedge reading anymore into it that what was told. On my last testing though, alcohol wasn't a hallucinogen.
Most replys to this thread are based on assumption.... That's the intraweb for ya!
.
At my Christmas Parties I don't get hammered, pull out loaded guns and shoot at noises in the basement...
because an SKS is a BATTLE PROVEN BEAR SLAYER!
CGN told me so!![]()
Damn, your parties sound boring!
Many of the Russians I worked with in the arctic used Simonov rofles with unmodified military 7.62x39 ball ammo to kill problem barren land grizzlies. They didn't hunt with them due to the limited range but for killing them at under 100 yards the Simonovs with their 10 round magazines did the job.
Would the guys have preferred a bigger better rifle? Of course but they used what was available to them.
I would have brought my .375 H&H if it had been allowed.
When I was in Kamchatka I was given the Game Guardian's Kalashnokov but sadly I never had the opportunity to try it out on a bear. We missed the salmon by a week or so and the bears had moved back in-land. I wasn't sure if I felt comfortable with it or not but with my limited Russian and his limited English, I got the message...."if bear comes, gun has 11 shots....pull trigger 11 times!"

Mr. Twister,
The problem I see with this, is that the guy was out drinking in the middle of the night with a loaded gun. That is irresponsible.
You are full of s**t. It not assumption that has people not liking the story, it's the facts included by the author.
You plan to go shooting, after dark. You plan to get piss drunk and have a firearm by your side. You decide to shoot at sounds in the night, you decide to retreat for more guns and come out again shooting while admittedly piss drunk. You tell the story and get the rightful disgust the story deserves,
The best well of intentioned plans end up goin for crap. happens ALL the time. Having a snaggled tooth G-Bear wantin ya for dinner is an understandable 'oversight' in my books.
Sometime #### just happens.... Like car accidents and pregnacy's.
As for christmas parties, ... Talk some sense would ya.

Fair enough, but you have NEVER fallen under the influence with guns and ammo at your disposal (at home OR otherwise)?

Sure have... Also with bleach under the sink, though I didn't drink it, also with keys in my pocket, though I didn't drive,
but I'll give you an awesome example since you mentioned pregnancy, While my wife was pregnant, I wouldn't drink very much unless there was another driver in the house who wasn't drinking. Why? I recognized that my wife was preganant, it's 40 minutes to the hospital, she could need to go at anytime,
... a little forethought can prevent many a bad situation.
If there was a bear, which I doubt, I suspect he had the best of intentions but was in no shape to carry out the actions.
I know of a guy who's wife went into labor,he dorve her to the hospital, hit a semi on the way and killed all three of them. He was also impaired at the time.
I'm sure he had the right intention, ...
It is my understanding that there are also not supposed to be any foxes on Vancouver Island. But I've seen one. Reddish colour with a big bushy tail.
