North Vancouver Island Grizzly Bear Encounter.

If they really believed that they were in any danger, why did they go to the vehicle then return with the sks rifles, instead of just getting in the vehicle, and driving away to safety?

Come on man, Grove didn't want to get in trouble for drinking and driving. Instead, turn off truck, and open fire into the darkness, where a noise was heard earlier.

MADD will be so proud of your actions.

I's was shootin at a bears see, and the big fire fell on my cell phone, den my buddy heer says sere's a grizzly right,so uh, I get's the gun right, (#### I'm drunk) anyways officer, I gets the guns right and I hears it movin towards us so shoots at it, and (hiccup) and then I 'm not sure if I hit it or , hold on a second, I was shootin at it right, cause it was gonna eat us right, and I couls see is eyes watchin us, big ol eyes and teet, (hiccup) dat's when I know it was him or me, so I got the gun right, the grizzly 12.5 in............... what kinda gun you use officer? That gun is nutting, you's should be packin an SKS, did (hiccup) you see mine? Anyways, so I gets me gun right, and starts shootin at the noise, he sounded right ready to pounce or attack ####, or something, so I said bring it on mudder Facker, and I let rip with 9 4 and half inch windgester Magnums, I say the ####er knew I meant business den ofiicer,
any how, to get to your question, NO WAY!!! NO WAY!!!! NO WAY OFFICER!
That worker with all the bullet hole in him was not anywhere to (hiccup) be seen, nope. fer sure. Soemone must ave shot em in Vancouver and dropped off here officer, dats what I'd say, (hiccup) he was probably right into the crystal meth or somethin' and Hells Angels got em (hiccup)
You ever fight with any of the Hells Angels?, I'm not scared of the ####ers, you got a light officer (hiccup)

FWIW, I take little from most stories I read on the net. Most posters can't convey the feel of the moment into words and readers tend to read more than what it is. In short I wasn't there so therefore can't judge.

This dude claims that he was firing shots into a known hillside that had an angry, snarlin' bear, standing in front it. What's the big deal? Or is it that you choose not to believe him??

As for trying to rationalize the thought process of loading up the SKS.... Stress affects many in different ways. The added compound of the Fireball would/could have added to making a rational decision, tough.... I wasn't there.

"What were you doing up there?"
At last check, it's not a law-breaker to go camping in the woods. Shooting either, for that matter.

Again; Bubba's coming in and your drunk. You have access to load up a gun. What are ya goin to do? Sign away your rights just because you had a few?? Or perhaps you'd move the guns out of the house for the planned Christmas party that you're hosting, just to be sure that ya can't have access to them because you plan on drinking??? That way you could offer Bubba a glass of cheer when he comes.

IMO, tudes such as this give fuel to the anti's.

Planned shooting events and guns don't mix. I don't condone that IF that is what went on/was planned. As for the attack and the outcome.... I wasn't there and hedge reading anymore into it that what was told. On my last testing though, alcohol wasn't a hallucinogen.

Most replys to this thread are based on assumption.... That's the intraweb for ya!

Mr. Twister,
The problem I see with this, is that the guy was out drinking in the middle of the night with a loaded gun. That is irresponsible.

You are full of ####. It not assumption that has people not liking the story, it's the facts included by the author.

You plan to go shooting, after dark. You plan to get piss drunk and have a firearm by your side. You decide to shoot at sounds in the night, you decide to retreat for more guns and come out again shooting while admittedly piss drunk. You tell the story and get the rightful disgust the story deserves,

As for christmas parties, ... Talk some sense would ya.
At my Christmas Parties I don't get hammered, pull out loaded guns and shoot at noises in the basement...

because an SKS is a BATTLE PROVEN BEAR SLAYER!

CGN told me so! ;)

Many of the Russians I worked with in the arctic used Simonov rofles with unmodified military 7.62x39 ball ammo to kill problem barren land grizzlies. They didn't hunt with them due to the limited range but for killing them at under 100 yards the Simonovs with their 10 round magazines did the job.

Would the guys have preferred a bigger better rifle? Of course but they used what was available to them.

I would have brought my .375 H&H if it had been allowed.

When I was in Kamchatka I was given the Game Guardian's Kalashnokov but sadly I never had the opportunity to try it out on a bear. We missed the salmon by a week or so and the bears had moved back in-land. I wasn't sure if I felt comfortable with it or not but with my limited Russian and his limited English, I got the message...."if bear comes, gun has 11 shots....pull trigger 11 times!"

MEDVED!!!!!! MEDVED!!!! :runaway::shotgun:

Yeah my Russian sucks too. After 5 years there I can count up to 8!

Piva was the first word I learned.....:D

Also learned the hard way that American Sausage = weiner. Bulgar wheat and a weiner for breakfast wasn't my idea of fine dining.

Piva, ocheem holodnyah pashalsta!

Пиво очень холодное пожалуйста!

But not with loaded guns or we'll get flamed like the author of this entertaining thread.

The best well of intentioned plans end up goin for crap. happens ALL the time. Having a snaggled tooth G-Bear wantin ya for dinner is an understandable 'oversight' in my books.

Sometime #### just happens.... Like car accidents and pregnacy's.

Fair enough, but you have NEVER fallen under the influence with guns and ammo at your disposal (at home OR otherwise)?

Sure have... Also with bleach under the sink, though I didn't drink it, also with keys in my pocket, though I didn't drive,

but I'll give you an awesome example since you mentioned pregnancy, While my wife was pregnant, I wouldn't drink very much unless there was another driver in the house who wasn't drinking. Why? I recognized that my wife was preganant, it's 40 minutes to the hospital, she could need to go at anytime,
... a little forethought can prevent many a bad situation.
If there was a bear, which I doubt, I suspect he had the best of intentions but was in no shape to carry out the actions.

I know of a guy who's wife went into labor,he dorve her to the hospital, hit a semi on the way and killed all three of them. He was also impaired at the time.
I'm sure he had the right intention, ...

It is my understanding that there are also not supposed to be any foxes on Vancouver Island. But I've seen one. Reddish colour with a big bushy tail.

I can't beileve.. cough. " pregnecy" actually came up on a Vancouver Island grizzly thread/CGN. Good grief.:D Guys, my Mrs is pregnent and this is the last place I thought I'd have to read that word. I'm on this site to get away from "todays parent" and other estrogen filled things!!!

Cheers

Seabass

Wow this is a great story! Good to hear you made it out alright.

I was recently up on the north end of the Island this August hiking the north coast trail before it got smashed by that storm. We saw black bears and fresh cougar/wolf prints but no grizzlies, allthough it does not supprise me they are on the Island.

I also just bought a 12.5" grizzly from Canada ammo for that same purpose, bear defence! What have you done to yous and is there anything I should know about them?

Thanks!
