Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot - CANCELED, Sorry guys

We still need 2 around 6", 2 around 10", and a few more as big as 24" - this should be thinner steel or we will never be able to hang it.

I think the next big job is getting a strong stand design that is quick to put up and stable enough to not fall over.

Jerry

The one I'll bring will have a 10" square gong. The stand will be crude but I hope effective: a tripod shape. One of the guys from last year had a great design- a sort of A frame from which the gong was suspended, with a longer rear support pole. That's what I'm trying to build, on the cheap and without welding. :D

katana, thanks for picking them up.

I also have a couple of gongs. 6X10, 7x7 and a 12" or thereabouts.

Pretty close to having enough gongs. A few more assorted sizes and shapes and we are good.

Now to focus on the stands. One suggestion was to use hooks on the gongs to a simple three legged stand could be fab'ed. Having a pipe on the top needs a cross pipe or hung off ropes/chains.

What do you guys think?

What about steel bars to hammer into the ground?

Weld 1 or 2 X 1/2" round stock to back of gong about 12-18" long and hammer into ground? Or use a sledge hammer?

Kinda hit and miss pounding round stock into the ground. The range is very rocky. lacustrine sedimentary rock to be exact The mountain side is composed of rhyolite and andesite Mixed with clay it is hard to pound just about anything into the ground. It can be done, it just means finding the right spot. :bangHead: Some just find it easier to set up a tripod mount that sits above the ground.

Max, remember all those boulders we were shooting?

Well, that is also what is 3" under the dirt. Stands will need to be above ground only.

Plus makes removal a whole lot easier.

FS, wow, I just call them ROCKS :)

This is what I have so far.

The size of the largest one does not show up very well. It is 1 1/4" plate, by 11" wide by 15" tall on the main full width portion. I haven't weighed it, but its heavy!
The six welds on the two plates on the left are holes that I plugged. (I fished these plates out of the dumper, they where revised or screwed up somehow.) I didn't feel much like plugging the 1 1/4" plate, so it comes with holes.

Katana, do you have a truck? Thats a lot of steel to pack in a Smart car, or a Mini!

I had some free time today (half day of work :D) and got a hold of Tootall and was able to pick them up. Is some one able to make hangers for them??? Tootall is to busy and I don't have the facility to make them either...

What it is the interior diameter of those 'rings'? Need to know for the cross rods. Anyone tearing out some old plumbing?

Remember that many of the gongs have to be carried several hundred yds to set up. This is a no drive area except on established trails.

So keep an eye on weight. two man portable hopefully.

I will make some 2x4 frames with ability to put a cross rod through to hold up the gongs. My goal is to have these prepped Friday so we just have to put up the gongs Sat morning. Then they can be moved for Sunday.
