So, initially I was planning on doing the BB course since they are offered most often and are relatively close to home.

However, it seems you must be an IPSC ontario member before they give you the BB certification, this I actually remember reading but it never clicked in my mind.

I actually don't have much interest in joining IPSC right now, and would rather not have to pay the $170 just for the membership and qualification.

Whats the next best option? I have seen IDPA CPD certifications, but couldn't find the cost of such a course, does anyone know? I think the next one is coming up at Colby in Waterloo, but its not until June.

Does anyone recommend any other courses for the certification? Preferably in the April/May timeline. I couldn't find much info on the IDPA certification either, it seems that courses are taught at the club level?

I can't help you about Ontario, but if you're not shooting one of the action sports, why do you need to carry your gun in a holster?
 
Probably don't want to hear this, but, if you take the BB Course, all other disciplines recognize it as suitable for Holster Certification (I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong on this). If you do go the IDPA CDP certification, you would still need to take the BB Course to shoot IPSC. So in the long run, it would be cheaper for you.

So maybe he can practice on his own? Or carry his pistol to and from targets without leaving it unattended on the table?

Exactly, plus I do want to do action shooting in the IDPA. The IDPA lists 5 or 6 certifications that allow a person to compete, I just wish the BB could be taken by a person who is not a member of IPSC :(
 
if you take an IDPA holster qual course it is free except maybe a day membership at the hosting club and or travel expenses for instructor which are minimal

PM steve david and I am sure he can hook you up with someone local or suggest you come to one of his shoots or courses.

I got back into shooting just for IPSC. If $170 is a hindrance for you joining IPSC then it's not really your sport. I think my last yearly expense for IPSC was about $2000. This was on the low side with no hardware costs.
 
For the record the $170 is for the course AND includes your first year in IPSC which accounts for $70 of the total.


So we are really talking about $100 for the course.

The course is 20 hours long so we are talking about $5 per hour for instruction.

When I took my BB course I went in thinking that I knew something about shooting.

When I walked out I had easily tripled my knowledge about shooting and firarms and realized that I only knew about 1% of what I could know.

It is a great time and you learn lots.

When I took my course there were no local ones so I ended up booking a hotel for the weekend. That cost much more than the course but was worth it.

When I wanted my R/O course...........the same thing.

When I wanted my CRO course..................yep you guessed it.

Mind you IPSC is much cheaper than golf and not near as boring.
 
I don't think there is a rank, but IPSC qualification is accepted by most of the other shooting sports.

When i take up IDPA / CDPA i'd make sure to take there course as i woudl find it very beneficial with regards to rules and knowledge of the sport. BB isn't only about safety, you get more knowledge than that.

The BB course is not a "Holster Certification" course. It's meant to teach the student how to shoot IPSC (and all the relevant safety, rules & regs...and skills required)


If all you want is something for holster certifiction...the BB course is over kill

Come on, you know you want it.;)

The BB is definatley the best barometer of where your skills are now, and where you'll be taking them in the short term.
 
For somebody interested in getting into IPSC in Canada the course is mandatory.

I enjoy IPSC and the $125 I paid got me into the sport with one years dues paid.

If you are not going to shoot IPSC and require a holster course to shoot IDPA at your club (An Ontario thing), then the the New Shooters Course will get you to the same place albeit at no cost with the need to take the Black Badge Course later if you are interested in IPSC.

Both course stress "Handgun SAFETY" and if you get nothing out of the course other than that you are ahead of the game.

Do you or anybody have any info about the upcoming Colby BB course? I live in the area and would be interested in signing up for this. I checked IPSC Ontario and the only ones posted are Waterfrod, Windsor, Burlington, East Elgin and Silverdale.

I didn't realize the IDPA, CDP Courses were free. Might be a good way to go then, if you just want to try the sports out, without shelling out extra money. I certainly won;t begrudge my BB Course, actually had a great time, and learned a ton. Was more than worth it in my opinion. Main thing is to get out and enjoy yourself.:D

Both courses would benefit you. In the IDPA course we do put a lot of focus on holster use as well as the rules.

By the way, Bob, I firmly believe you and I have become good friends, but I have to tell you this:

GOLF SUCKS............!

CDP is not free, every CDP courses I taught before moving to IDPA, each shooter was charged $50 and that was remmited back to the CSSA via the CDP National Coordinator.
