Russian SKS45 long thread.

I phoned them today just to clarify, and talked to a firearms guy who said they are all the same quality, and none have the black paint on the bolt carriers. This is while I was looking at pictures of blackened refurbs guys have already posted here.

I had to explain to him what refurbishment entailed, but he insisted the bolt carriers were in the white.

I guess I won't know until mine arrives and I can open up the box.

SIR staff are a fountain of disinformation
I think they were trained by the CIA !

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Yeah, they are sure good at playing mind games.

Maybe they've had the rifles the whole time, and have just been toying with us.

Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket!

yes, 1949 was the first year it was produced .... there is no SKS made in 1945 , when they say 45 or 1945 they meant the model name SKS45 or SKS 1945 (on my CFC transfer notice).

Nope. They started production in 1945 and SKS was even used (tested) during last few months of WW2. In 1949, it officially became main battle rifle.

i beg to differ. there was no production in 1945 . it had a pre-production in 1944. you cannot count pre-production as production bcos it was still being tested and it was produced before the adoption in 1945.

from book:

the sks carbine SKS45 by steve kehaya & joe poyer 4th rev.
"Preliminary trials showed such promise that a preproduction run was completed in the spring of 1944. The new carbines were sent to combat forces, fighting on the First Byelorussian front, for the testing under battlefield conditions, and to the Officer Training School at vistrel."

About that 1 stamped on the front sight:

I was told that the rifles were graded for accuracy from 1 being the best to 3 meeting the minimum requirement. I have no idea if that is correct or not, just what I was told...

Not totally correct. 1945 was the date the SKS design was officially adopted as the next battle rifle for Russia. 1949 is the date that the first of what we now know as the SKS45 was built in mass production for general consumption at the troop level in the USSR. There were a few revisions between 1944 and 1949 made to the rifle. Just like the AK47,which as given consent to replace the SKS in 1947,it did not start production until 1951-52,and then was re-engineered in 53-54. Hence the bringing on line of Izehvsk in 1953-54 to build more SKSs,along with Tula while the AK was being fixed.

Another Supplier

Bashaw Sports (in Bashaw, AB) has about 20 SKS in stock still. I was there today and picked up a 1950 all matching laminate for $275. I also picked up a bi-pod ($30) and sight adjustment tool ($10).
