25-06 for Moose

My sons , both shot their first moose with a 25/06 . Using a 100 gr hornady and 100gr nosler partition. It took care of business no problem. I have always belived in shot placement and you can't go wrong.

Straight Shooting

I loaded the 120gr GS for my buddy's 25-06, he took a large elk at close range. A couple quick shots to the boilerroom did the trick. We now load 100gr Barnes TSX which has knocked over a small bullwinkle.

25-06 is plenty for moose choosing your shots(as you should with any round).
I'v got a few with both 120gr partitions, and core-lokt, both put moose in the freezer without a problem.

load up a good bullet like the tsx, nosler, wait for a good broadside shot and it will do the trick. If you are using a standard bullet just stay away from any serious quartering shots and all should be good.

I normally reserve my 25-06 for deer, but the damage I've seen them do to deer tells me that you could take a moose with a good heavy bullet, I've been using 120grn Nosler Balistictips, but have recently switched to 110grn Nosler Accubonds. (still need to work upa load and hunting season is just around the corner  )

I have a moose gun that I use when hunting moose, 300WM with 200grn Nosler Accubond, and they work great :D

Charlie. Do you really need to shoot a moose with a 25-06?
It will get the job done for sure, but I'm sure you have a better choice in your safe. I have a .300 WM here you can use anytime.

There is no "better" choice that will compensate for a poor shot. In other words, a leg broken with an anti tank gun is still just a broken leg.

Oh ya the 2506 should be perfect but why stop there, I bet you could get it done with a 22-250. Show the animal some respect and use a real gun. Why hunt our biggest game with a freakin pop gun? Flame all you want, I've hunted for 35 yrs with most calibers from fairly small to stupid big. Just because you can kill something with a given caliber doesn't make it a good choice.

By golly I believe you may be right! Question: How many one shot bang-flops does it take to make a cartridge a good choice? "Nother question: Once having made the choice is it wrong to pass the info on to others? And quite seriously, does a one shot kill on a paranoid grizz with a Nyati make that the only choice?
I'm just taking a rest from the shop, and enjoy stirring the pot.:D

There has been no doubt countless moose taken with the "quarter-bores", including the 25-35, 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 25-06 and 257 Weatherby ... and I'm sure, even several of the smaller cartridges and calibers.

But the OP asked about the 25-06 with 120 gr. Speer GS's.....

Yes, I'm sure they'll work just fine, as would 115 Barnes TSX's, Nosler 120 Partitions and Swift 120 A-frames and likely other choices as well.

I took a big cow 6 years ago with a .25-06 A-Bolt using Speer Nitrex 120 gr Grandslam factory rounds and she dropped like a piano fell on her from the 10th floor. I cleanly took a medium sized cow 8 years ago with a .243 win and 100 gr bullets with a neck shot. The .25-06 is plenty of medicine for moose, they aren't particularly tough to kill. The Grandslam, partition, and Barnes Tsx are great bullets for moose.

When I shot the moose with a 250 Savage, I was fairly close and had a good rest. I dropped it with a shot behind the ear, instant kill with no tracking.
I prefer bigger calibers for big game, but this was an opportunity that I wasn't going to pass up.
