Best non-res SHTF gun?

It does in the sense that in the case of a SHTF scenario our dear old Government would immediately seize all the restricted and prohibited firearms they know of, while leaving the subsitance hunters (who use non-restricted firearms, and those who own "antiques" not in the books) relatively alone .... That's me theory anyway.

Well.... when the government comes to seize anything that is the biggest definition of SHTF, can't really think of a bigger one (except for the zombies :) ). When that happens I would want anything that makes the biggest hole in the fastest way possible.

Definitely consider a Mossberg 590 with some aftermarket modifications...mine has a Mesa Tactical side saddle and a Hogue reduced LOP overmolded stock...9 rounds of 2.75" 000 Buck and an extra 6 of 3" magnum slugs will certainly deal with any close and moderate range threats that you may encounter. It can also be easily equipped with optics as well as they are drilled and tapped for Weaver/Picatinny rail mounts.

Buckshot is useless beyond 40-50 yards, even less with the cylinder bore of the 590. Slugs are usable to 100 if you're good. Either selection is no match for a centre fire rifle. Optics on a smooth bore is counter productive and still does not address the reduced capacity, excessive recoil and excessive report.

SPRINT,
I agree "the loaded one" question is, why aren't they all loaded?

Non-restricted in .308, T-26 copy. ("Tanker Garand")

PS: That's a Leupold fixed 2.5 power, scout scope BTW.
A Colt brushed stainless teel, 1991A1 45 Auto, and one of my M37 Deerslayer Police Specials, with extended magazine would be it's companions.

In this country, any civilian carrying any gun, would most likely be identified as an enemy combatant by default.

I disagree in this society there would be no regulatuions to protect the unarmed...those with rifles would be seen as authority.

LOL.

If the SHTF you wouldnt be worried if your gun was restrcted or not.

Bang on, I'd say any CQB style AR or Swiss Arms....223/5.56mm, defensive or home defence etc..unless you're on the offensive

AR15 M4 Carbine for me, with irons or BUIS and Simple optic like an ACOG.

I'd add a .22LR conv kit for taking out food :)

Lacks capacity, excessive recoil, excessive muzzle report. The shotgun is a poor choice. The SKS is far better but is no match for the VZ IMO.

Yes. But take into consideration that you most likely wont be alone in such a situation (hopefully) different types of boomsticks could be an advantage. Same as war ... soldiers didn't all carry the same gun. Diversity is key in some cases. Next to the sks a 12 gauge isn't as usefull ... but it has it's place.

I don't have a VZ .... yet... so I might have to settle.

Hi:
I think the point on the thread is best non-restricted - because many don't have restricted or prohibited guns to begin with. So if you don't have them before something happens - you're not likely to get your hands on one afterwards...

Best choice would be something that every other hunter has ammo for. You could always barter for more. SO that would likely be the major hunting calibers (.30-06, .308, shotgun rounds, .22). Really just about anything that YOU have with LOTS of ammo for (like 7.62, .223). Or have all above just in case.
KB.

The chances of getting your hands on them would be a bit better as there will most likely be several laying on the ground next to there former owners! Don't you thind?
