this is bullsh**

That is how Oka should have been handled. Roadblocks (IMHO) are acts of terrorism. I don't envy the position Treaty Indians are in but there are better avenues to resolve the problems.
Are you serious? I'd love to be in the position to blame everyone else for my stupid choices in life. Be able to hunt and fish year round. Nobody expects you to actually do anything. You can sell your kill/catch to the nearest customer to support yourself. Jesus, what's not to like.
Maybe the whining treaty types should try working a 2800 hr work year so they understand exactly what they have.
Can you imagine...eat until you're tired...sleep until you're hungry...repeat.

For those that leave the reserves, life can be good. In alot of ways better than yours or mine. Year round fishing/hunting would be a nice plus. There are big problems with the system they are living in. Corruption by their own ranks right up there.

I have learned 2 things about hunting in Canada.

1- Everyone thinks they own Crown land.

2- He who has the biggest stick, wins.

They are under the impression that all the land is theirs...in fact when treaty claims were filed a few years back 110% of BC was claimed...by that I mean there was 10% overlapping claims. Apparently camping in a spot in your teepee for 3 weeks a year entitles you to the 1000 acres surrounding your firepit

Regardless it's breaking the law. I am not a tough guy but I would never back down from someone who was attempting to deny me my rights to crown land which are protected by law. One thing about RCMP in rural and remote areas that most people fail to realize is they are often the only non indian (yes indian..there is no such thing as a 'Native' North American, anthropologists have proven they came here like everyone else, just earlier) people in the community, and as such have to tread lightly in some instances. That being said, it's the complete lack of respect for the law that has allowed them to think they can do whatever they please, to whomever they please, with NO LEGAL BACKING. I didn't steal your land (and I use the term steal very loosely), but I will be goddamned if I will allow you to steal mine.

Myself I am all for self indian self government with reasonable settlement of land claims....and along with that the free ride is over. No more government assistance, no more tax breaks, no free medical, dental, university education, no more anything...you want your own nation, have at it, just don't be trying to collect welfare in my nation.

We would always stash our vehicles under camo netting and foliage. Less problems that way. Our hunting rigs were always heavily offroaded to keep them out of the way too.

Now we hunt in a remote area with a boat to get to our hunting camp in Northern BC.

I am sorry you ran into those thugs. The authorities need to keep order, and people illegally blocking you from exercising your rights and paid for hunting permits should be made to stop.

Thats spot on! And the reason why I only hunt private property. I don't care if the property ai'nt so productive, I go hunting to relax.

Oh Canada! Our home on native land...

I'd be making a ghillie suit and filling my draw anyway. Put a target with a nice tight group on it in the window of your truck next to a sign that says, " Keep your hands off my truck, and I'll keep my crosshairs off yours."

Those Effected By Blockades

I saw this on another site and thought it might be of interest.

To all BCWF members:

At the latest meeting of your elected BCWF Board of Directors discussed the matter of the ongoing blockade by the Tahltan First Nations of the Klappan River Rd. There was news of another at Telegraph Creek and the Boulder Rd. (We heard that this last one didn’t last) As a result of the discussion the following motion was passed.

“Whereas members of the Iskut First Nation have set up a roadblock on the Klappan River Road interfering with a legal hunt
And whereas this is an illegal act
And whereas there has been harassment, vandalism and financial loss to our members as a result of these actions

Therefore be it resolved that the BCWF Board of Directors instruct the BCWF Legal Defense Advisory Committee to compile a report for submission within five working days identifying what laws have been broken by members of the Iskut band and what damages have resulted to our members as a result of these illegal actions”

What I need is reporting back to me by members who have been impacted by this or other blockades. I would like

1 Details of any acts of intimidation, threats or warnings of repercussions for breaking the blockade or conditions attached to it
2 Details of costs incurred only to abandon the hunt or shift the hunting effort to other locations
3 Details of loss of an opportunity to use your LEH authorization
4 Information on any acts of vandalism or harassment related to your effort to hunt in the area.
5 Copies of any written material handed out, posted or otherwise distributed
6 Any notes taken during confrontation or explanation for denial of access
7 Information of any spoken apology or justification for the action of blockading the public right of access.

We are confining this information gathering to our members. However, if you know of non-members who wish to pass on their information I will compile it, just make note that they are not members. Also, don’t let the limiting date in the above motion deter you from sending me your information. You may not be back home until well past the “five working days” stipulation in the motion. Don’t worry about that, I will compile the information.

Please pass this information on as we are trying to gather as much data we can in support of whatever future action we may have to take. A similar message to this will be in the Outdoor Edge too.

Send any and all information to me @

My hunting area on Crown Land was so packed with hunters this Fall that next year I am seriously considering a fly-out hunt. Would be nice just to get away from crowded areas and hunt in undisturbed areas.

The nice thing about my area is that if you hunt by boat you can get pretty remote too. Downside is that anything that is accessible by quad is over-run.

I live in remote area so float plane trip would only be minutes to access even more remote area.

I don't understand why the RCMP aren't involved, uttering threats and vandalism would warrant RCMP involvment, the CO's could enforce these laws as well but its not really something they would normally do, CO's could also charge with interfering with a legal hunt. The double standard is unbelievable in this country.

Tell the rcmp you are going in and need an escort to keep the peace.

I'd go one further if this were the route I chose to pursue. RCMP no doubt have been instructed to not get involved at the street level of this conflict for fear of public backlash in the event of an escalation. I'd actually tape and record my conversation with the RCMP that I was going hunting (legally) and due to previous threats to my person I was requesting escort to ensure my safety. When, not if, they denied you escort and suggested that you didn't do ahead with your hunting trip so as not to endanger yourself you could forward the footage to media outlets and post it on YouTube. Public embarrassment is the only way to get action.

That would be a very good idea. Being a LEO has to be one of the most difficult tight-rope walks going, but FFS, YOU CHOSE THE CAREER. In my opinion, it's the same as a soldier declining to fight after volunteering for the job. There is a reason they get paid $90K for 26 weeks of school and three years experience.

Even here in Alberta on the grave flats road they've been stealing quads and anything else they can get their hands on. RCMP flat out refuse to even investigate and claim that they can't even enter the reserve without permission... What a bunch of bull.
These guys can come off the reserve, do whatever they please, steal whatever they please. Yes once they make it back nothing can be done? How is that in this day and age.
Even the CO we ran into on the trails warned us.

I know if they took my ####... I'd be coming home with it.

Don't want to offend, or cause any argument, but I would be standing my ground. I live in a terrible neighbourhood and don't back down from any of these thugs and crackheads when I walk my dog, or go to the corner store. So I would definetily not be backing down from these idiots. I would be packing my 15 inch pump 12ga, strapped to my back, and wouldn't hesitate to chamber a round if confronted. The reason these pricks keep doing this sh*t is because they keep getting away with it. The feds need to find their balls, and start crackin skulls at these roadblocks. It's gonna come down to someone gettin shot and then it's too late. These federal government pricks are so scared of bad press they would rather not act. What has this world come to. Now as for destruction of property, if they slashed my tires I would be kickin some ass.
