I was HUNTED by a wolf tonight. Updated.

this is a great thread. epic. there is howling all around me! (its just my hunting buddies reading the story over my shoulder).

Hunted by a wolf? a lone wolf..... hunting a large mammal.... making all kinds of noise..... yes, this sounds like typical K( hunting behavior....

cany type any more, laughing to hard to breath

I respect bow hunters,

I have a hard time thinking its a good idea to not bring a gun on a hunting trip

For all of my long life I have heard the stories. wolves following people at night, surounding their camp, shadows in the moonlight, glimpses through the trees.
All of the stories are based the same, wolves all around a helpless soul, scared the pants off him/her/them, but all the tales end the same; the wolves leave in the morning/when, nearly back to camp/the road/home.
In all these years and years of stories I have heard, there was never a single time that the wolves attacked! Or attempted to attack a helpless individual.
So what the hell are you afraid of because there are some wolves around?
And I can't bring myself to comment on coyotes being dangerous to human adults.
I have never, ever, heard of a wounded wolf that attacked, or attempted to attack, the shooter that wounded him. In my own experience I have twice walked up to a wolf that I had wounded. In each case the wolf was on all fours and in pretty good looking shape. But each one timidly stood there, feet away, while I tried to figure out where I could place a bullet to finish them, that would not ruin any more hide than I could help.
Until the wolves in nothern Saskatchewan that had been habitually feeding at a garbage dump killed a man they came across near the dump, there had never been a single, verified case of wolves killing a human.
I repeat, what the hell are you afraid of?

Coyotes are wolves, the small brand. If I lived in an area with lots of coyotes and had small children I would certainly take precautions. They are much more bold than the timber [Gray] wolves. In this area the grays are breeding with the coyote, and the result is a fair sized hybrid. They have no problem taking deer and livestock. If someone is caught in the woods at night with a hungry pack around there might not be anything left to verify. Years ago I used to snare them and would kill them with a stick, untill one time I caught one of them hybrids or maybe was a gray and when he stood and faced me with the lip back and that low rumbling, I can tell you I went and got the gun. I would trust a wolf about the same as a politician.

been up close and hugged a tiger, and lion, even a bear.QUOTE]

There has never been a documented wolf attack on a person. The next time a wolf is "hunting" you try runing at it see what happens.......:jerkit:

About 4 years ago a guy was killed and eaten by wolves in Saskatchewan. It's extremely rare, but it's possible.
Eaten, maybe. Killed? I doubt it...........
I think that most of the time wolfs are just checking us out.
Looking for a hand out......

Ontario man killed in wolf attack, coroner's jury finds
First documented case in North America of a healthy wolf killing a human in the wild

A coroner's jury in Saskatchewan has determined that Ontario university student Kenton Carnegie was killed in a wolf attack.

Carnegie was 22 when he died in November 2005 near Points North Landing, Sask. On a work term for a company at the mining exploration camp, located about 750 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, Carnegie went for a walk and didn't come back.

Searchers later found his body surrounded by wolves.

Witnesses told the inquest that wild animals had been feeding at an unregulated garbage dump. Concerns were expressed that wolves in the area had lost their natural fear of humans.

Paul Paquet, an expert on wolf biology who studied the case for the coroner's office, told the inquest earlier in the week that it was more likely that a black bear killed Carnegie, although a wolf attack was also a possibility.

He said he based his findings on all the evidence, including the way the body had been consumed and moved around.

But his evidence didn't jibe with what people on the scene observed. No one reported seeing a bear in the area.

Another wolf expert, Mark McNay, who had studied the case for Carnegie's family, told the jury he was convinced it was a wolf attack.

The jury's finding is significant, because there are no documented cases in North America of a healthy wolf killing a human in the wild.

The jury made a series of recommendations on how to prevent similar incidents. Among them is a requirement for the Saskatchewan Environment Department to provide proper fencing and supervision at all landfills where there are known to be wildlife feeding.

I guess everybody is an armchair quarterback on here, 10 feet tall 500pounds, but what would you do if this happened to you?

You being the one who has to make the decisions...

It sounds like he didnt have a firearm in the tree with him while he was up there. Are you telling me that you wouldnt be at least thinking of popping a few rounds if you could?

If it growls at me and I cant see it, there is a lead deficiency in its diet, laws be damned.

Apparentlly nobody wanted to admit that a wolf killed someone, it was a 2 year coroners inquest.

Read that sentence from the experts:

"because there are no documented cases in North America of a healthy wolf killing a human in the wild."

It means that all the other victims were killed by unhealthy wolves.

Any predator will size you up and try to figure out if it can take you and make a snack out of you ...or if you will do the same to it. Blanket statements on coyotes, wolves, black bears, and cougars not eating humans is absurd. What makes us so special compared to any other warm blooded animal out there? Their fear of man or lack there of, is purely based on conditioning from it's own learned and/or taught experiences from it's parents. It's either figured out man is a big pussy or that man shoots/kills and must be avoided. The less we shoot them the more brazen they become.
