sorry, i was having a bad hair day.
MBP. Your avatar is creeping me out.
you still have to aim with a shotgun but its alot more forgiving
You guys are all crazy there is no way your not getting charged if you shoot someone I don't care what anyone says... He better have a knife be 6'5 ,drunk and you better have 20 wittiness and the whole thing on camera to get away with it. I'm not saying don't defend yourself I'm just saying be prepared for consequences of are stupid laws after you do..
Well I say if your wife is happy shooting the .22LR and not happy with the others, then your choice is made. There is a test a gentlemen did at 300yards and every single round of .22LR went completely through a frozen turkey wearing denim and two other layers. 1 .22 round might not be "very lethal", but anyone with a handfull of little 22 cal holes in their body will go into shock immediately, or just plain die. Your wife can pull a trigger 5-10 times happily, or be too scared to fire one round of any larger calibre.
Get a nice Doberman named Destroyer, and don't worry about the guns man. If you do, then just buy her her own 10/22 and teach her how to become a battle babe. Thats what Im doing with my gal.
get her some ear protection for use on the range.
in a home defense scenario, loud is good.
you should be looking for a tool that can quickly and effectively resolve the confrontation. plinking at a 200lb drugged up badguy in winter clothing with a .22 is not likely to end well for her, and IMO is providing a false sense of security.
i would not like to be shot with a .22, or even an air rifle for that matter - but i have seen countless times how ineffective the .22 can be on even raccoon-sized game and do not think that this should be a consideration for a home defense weapon unless it is literally all you have available. there is a tremendous difference between a .223 and .22lr in power and wound ballistics.
in addition to my .25-06 or .223, i take a .22lr (10/22T) along with me each year i go groundhog hunting as a spare gun and also a loaner for friends who like to come along with us but lack a varmint gun. ill often switch with them to the .22 so theyre not saddled with it the whole time, and they can make some bigger bangs. i consider a .22lr a marginal weapon for even groundhogs - unless you make a headshot, there is a very good chance that it will escape to/down its hole.
yes many animals have been killed with a .22, but many animals have also been killed with an atlatl -- doesnt mean your wife should rely on one to end a confrontation quickly and decisively.
again if its your ONLY choice, then use it. but if you have other choices - such as the OP in this thread - then specifically choosing a .22 would be very unwise.
.22 all the way in a semi.
1. I've seen a caribou downed with a .22 long rifle in one shot, right behind the ear. No fuss. No recoil. Dropped like a sack of sh*t.
2. MASSAD use it by choice and train for two shots to the head.
3. If you remember, President Reagan almost died by some azzhat with a .22 pistol.
There are a host of examples of the lethality of the measly .22.

i just picked this up off the EE. factory 18" barreled 20 gauge 870 compact, with a Knoxx spec-ops recoil reducing stock. i figure itll make an ideal lightweight walkaround grouse gun, as well as the perfect gun to give to new shooters - especially women and kids.
if thats not the ideal shotgun for a chick, i dont know what is. it is light, loaded it feels half as heavy as a loaded 12 gauge. feels a lot handier too. takes chokes too, which is a huge plus for me on any shorty barrel.
the fact that its a 20, not a 12, plus the Knoxx stock and proper gun fit should ensure that recoil is light, yet its still powerful enough to put someone down with one shot.
you can buy the gun itself (with regular short LOP stock with spacers so you can adjust LOP from 12" to 13") for around $380 brand new, and order a Knoxx stock for it.
