.45ACP Defence Load...can you do better than this???

Given the fact there isn't a single documented case of someone being charged or sued over the use of reloads I wouldn't read so much into it. Defend yourself with whatever works best for you.

First, Hornady is good stuff. I like their ammo allot, but 950 FPS isn't all that "hot". I've got some Speer GD 127 gr. 9mm +P+ that's like 1350 FPS out of a 4" barrel. 950 is pretty decent for a 45, but it's not for anything else.

Second, Why are you bragging about paying $30 for 20 rounds? My God that's pricey, you could handload those bullets (Everyday normal XTP's) onto used brass for about 30% of that. Also, you could HANDLOAD 45 to much higher pressures then that "hot" factory ammo is right now.

Third, handloading is not second class ammunition. I'm unaware of any shooting champion over the last 10 years that used "factory" ammunition to compete with. Factory ammo is alright, but your going to pay through the nose and it's never loaded to it's maximum potential.

Look at 10mm. The "hottest" 10mm you can buy (in Canada at least) is maybe 200gr. @ 1050 FPS. That's NOTHING compared to handloads, where you can get up to 1300+ for the same gr. bullet.

Most factory ammo is wimpy at best.

Haven't fired much factory hey?

BTW the Ranger +P+ 127gr, SXT does 1225 out of a 4" barrel.

Want something hot. Try a Speer GD +P+ 155gr. 9mm. It does 1440fps out of a G17. How about a 9mm with 530ft/lbs of energy? Hotter than any load I've tried in 9mm, .40S&W, .45GAP/ACP.

Don't care about 10mm, its a dead cartridge with absolute zero selection in Canada.

Keep handloading hot, one of these days your range experience isn't going to be too friendly. Ask how I know. 15 years ago I hot loaded everything too. Took one blown up gun to change my mind that velocity isn't everything.

I take pride in my handloads, but would NEVER trust one in a life or death situation.

Too all that want to launch a .45 handloaded slug at 1300fps, your time is coming......

:yingyang:

First of all, the Winchester RANGER and Winchester SXT aren't the same thing.

The bullet used in both loads is the same and it is called the SXT, but the Ranger's are loaded for law enforcement specifically while the SXT is made for civilians.

Also, 9mm rounds don't come in 155 gr. and if they did they certainly wouldn't be going 1440 FPS. :yingyang:

The Ranger 115 grain +P+ gets 1320 FPS, I could not find load data for a Ranger in 127 grain +P+.

http://www.firearmstactical.com/ammo_data/9mm.htm
9mm 115 grain Winchester Ranger JHP +P+, 1/9/98: 4" 1320 fps

They're are rounds for sale in the US (I haven't seen any up here) that are called Glaser Safety Slugs. They offer a 85 grain 9mm +P that gets something like 1800 FPS.

It's not all about velocity, and I'm certainly not advocating that it is, but at $30 / 20, that had better be some damn special ammo.

I don't know if its made anymore but the best factory ammo to use in a self defense situation according to Evan Marshall's stats used to be Speer's 200 grain "flying ashtray" load.
Anyone know if its still made?
Eric

My bad, I was talking about a 115gr. Speer +p+.

The Ranger loads are all still known as SXT, right on the box. Also known as Ranger-series. Its the third or fourth generation bullet. The civilian SXT is a different bullet altogher with inferior ballastics. It is not offered in any weight except the 147gr.

Commercial/military ammo is sealed at the primer and case mouth to prevent water and oils/solvents from entering and killing the primer/powder.

Would you trust your life to less than perfect ammo? How many rounds do you need? The average number of rounds in personal defense situations is less than 3. Buy the best ammo you can find for serious use, it is cheap and it works every time.

Handloads are a liability in court after the serious use. Read The Truth About Self-Protection by Massad Ayoob.

My $00.02
Why are handloads a liability in court?

Lawyers ....will eat you up in court,
Use what local cops carry , or better yet a bird gun. bottom line , that lets the courts know your not out for a fight, just a home owner protecting his or her life, and their loved ones.
This doesn't make sense to me.

If I'm going to court to defend myself for murder or manslaughter (because I shot a violent home invader) I'm going to be using a top-notch lawyer also. The crown won't be the only person represented by lawyers.

Plus, I simply cannot see how anyone could argue that reloaded ammo is any different from store bought ammo.

Not to mention, as they say in the US, dead men tell no tales. Birdshot is nothing less than pre-meditated aggrevated assualt. You won't avoid jailtime firing that at someone.

Massad Ayoob himself is unable to come up with a single case of someone being charged or sued for using Handloads. People mistook his saying there COULD POTENTIALLY be a problem and just assumed there will be.

I would recommend you find out exactly what loads *your* pistol can handle if you are using +P ammo. Some people say go ahead, but I will not use a +P load in *my* firearm without an after market barrel specifically rated for higher pressure rounds. Maybe I am being too careful, but there are a lot of guys on the board with older model .45s from certain unnamed foreighn countries with questionable QC so I might as well put it out there...

it doesn't have to be a foreign gun- the 45 acp brass is only rated to about 19k psi anyway before it fails in the head area- the way that 45 "magnums" achieve their whomp and stomp is through the use of RIFLE brass , which is MUCH thicker in the head area

My small collection of hollowpoints, right now I can't find any 45 auto for the life of me, I already have hydra-shok 45's, I would some other brands to try out.

My dream choice would be some DPX in 45 auto, simple to find down south, impossible up here. You don't wanna know how much I would pay for that stuff :)

It depends on which standard: CIP specifies 19 ksi, but SAAMI is 21 ksi. SAAMI +P rating is 23 ksi. CIP and SAAMI test procedures are different, so pressure ratings aren't directly comparable, but +P loads use the same cases.

That said, ammunition that exceeds the +P rating does use brass with a thicker web eg. .45 Super, .45-08, .451 Detonics, etc.

Buffalo Gun centre, lots of flavours of .45 defense loads. Yes, the Hornady are really good, that and Corbon are about the best.

It is pretty funny to read some of the posts in context. People "discussing" somewhat academic differences in bullet performance, yet when it comes to "defending" yourself in court, it is completely dismissed.

No, using a reload will not be THE reason someone is charged, but it is a factor that WILL sway a jury and could mean the difference if you remain free or not. Remember that juries are made up of people that have nothing better to do and are certainly not knowledgeable. They are swayed by EMOTION as much as facts/logic. (ever argued with an anti? facts are irrelevant)

You would never get the chance to "argue" the point. The prosecutor will simply make you out to be a blood thirsty "killer" who used "special" high penetrating, handcrafted, super power, dumb-dumb ammo that you put together especially to KILL that assailant, instead of just wounding him or detaining him and it is further proof that you were just waiting for the chance to kill someone (you must be a killer, you own guns, right?). It leaves a mental image on the jury that is impossible to erase by the defendant. You will instantly be put on the defensive by a fact that seems trivial to YOU.

As someone said, this is not the US. That's right, you WILL be detained and charged simply because you use a gun to defend yourself. Use what the police use, then it becomes a non-issue.

Self defence is not just about the couple seconds during an attack, but preparing yourself for the longer term legal implications as well.

Except you can't import it without a US Export Permit and corresponding Canadian Import Permit. Check the legalese forum for laws and (severe) consequences if you are caught in a US exit check. (you WILL be banned from entering the US for a long time)
