well looks like there will be no need for a final poll to get it down to the best two as the votes are the same, they just get bigger, but no firearm is changing its position.

Oh come on Poll-Boy! :D We were expecting another 1000 polls from you! Don't let us down!

what gets me is that there have beem over a thousand views and only 200 votes, what gives, no one can vote, you know you don't need to be registered eh lol

I know I'm opening a can of worms but why does everyone here on a Canadian gun forum so M1 Garand happy ? I thought the Enfield would win hands down.

I've handled an M1 Garand, never fired one, but I did not like the weight of it unloaded. Some may call it an uber semi-automatic rifle but you wouldn't catch me carrying it around if I had a choice.

It's a "best weapon" poll, not a "your favourite" poll (although many seem to be voting that way). In all honesty the LE, although dear to our hearts, has no business being even in the top 5 WW2 weapons. The M1 does (although I would put it at 2 or 3).

If this was a WW1 poll LE would get top marks.

No one has explained to me why they think the M1 is so "uber". That is what I would like to know as I can't figure it out.

To reply to your question..this is not a poll of what a 1940's design morphed into years after the war ended. We are comparing and choosing the best military firearms of WW2 based on available technology of that time.
Several factors come into consideration in making a choice amongst the choices provided...Durability, accuracy, ease of use by soldiers, power, availability, ordnance support, rate of fire both by the individual rifleman and on a squad, platoon or company level.
Using these parameters, it appears the M-1 Garand stands out above all others, though there are limiting factors in the design of the rifle, it is still the best of the firearms listed. The popularity of the M-1 because they are as readily identifiable, here in Canada, as a Lee Enfield. I does surprise me that the K98 Mauser would not have been as popular.
I hope this answers your question.
Cheers

The good ol' Mauser rifle unfortunately had much more competition from the start as the Germans had a slew of incredibly advanced weaponry to choose from in their poll. The K98 is right up there with the LE as far as bolt actions go. Personally it edges the LE out IMHO but that's just preference. :)

I'm not bashing the poll, just asking why everyone likes the M1. Thanks for the explanation though.

I think it has the most votes because of its rate of fire over the LE and its portability over the MG42. If it's any consolation the M1 was invented by a Canadian. ;)

All that said though I'd still rather have an MP44 or SVT than an M1!

Personally, I believe the Garand an over cumbersome weapon, however for the time, for the need, I believe it did it's job well. Just pray you did not have a jamb in the midst of combat or, pray now, a case seperation. Oh and don't forget clogged gas porting. Personally, I still give the MG-42 my vote, as though the Garand on a individual soldier level was an excellent weapon, on a platoon level, when used properly and efficeintly, an MG42 could provide the suppressing fire that 10 Garands could given same circumstances I should think. The Garand was made by a Canadian, it's true. I praise Mr. Garand for his invention, now if they had only stuck with the .276 and the 10 round mag capacity, rather than the 30-06 I believe it would have solved alot of issues.
